MG ZR boot wont open!

Hi,

I have seen this problem a bit around on the internet, but can't find a solution to it!

My MG ZR is a 2005 model, so it does not have an external opening device for the boot - the only way to open it is on the remote key fob! (pretty stupid design if you ask me!)

The boot stopped opening a while back, so I removed the internal panel on the boot, and opened it manually. There was no apparent problem, and it started working again... I added a bit of grease for good luck...

A few days later it stopped opening again, and hasn't opened since. All that happens is a quiet 'click' noise from under the steering wheel somewhere - near the fuse box. I have checked all the fuses, and they are fine... can't find anywhere in the handbook that relates to this sort of problem either!

I have now tied a piece of string to the internal opening mechanism, so you can open the boot with a tug from the passenger side rear door! - It works but is less than convenient!

Has anyone had this issue and managed to overcome it? I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

thanks very much

Chris

Hi Chris,
You need to remove the plastic on the tailgate, from the inside, and get try to find the metal catch to the left. If it is out then put it back in. Also you should try to put some grease or a cable tie to hold it in place. This should hopefully sort it out. I know about this because it happened to on of our MG ZR 160's

Hi there,

Thanks for your advice.

i have double checked, and there is definitely nothing out of place. The mechanism works fine... you can grab it and it moves smoothly and the boot opens.

I had to take the plastic off the inside of the tailgate previously to tie the string to the mechanism - which is now my sole method of opening the boot!

I'm fairly sure the fault lies elsewhere... I guess I'll have to hire an electrician to come have a look at it!?

Thanks anyway

I bought a replacement solenoid from ebay - one that was in good working order! It does not work...

I still hear a quiet 'click' from under the steering wheel somewhere, and nothing else happens!

this is really frustrating now! I am a drummer, and it is a massive ball ache having to work around a bit of string that opens the boot! Does anyone have any thoughts they can offer?!

thanks in advance,

Chris

I think that your problem is in BCU (Body Control Unit) under the dash. This unit controls many thing among them is central locking and I think boot opening.
It may well be that one relay or integrated circuit failed and do not let you open your boot by remote. Here is long thread about BCU/SCU unit: http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=384938&highlight=boot

My advice would be to send PM to Technozen and ask if he could be of help regarding this problem.

I have just fixed my boot it was just making a clicking noise in the fuse box when i pressed key fob the problem was the wires that connect the boot to the car they had just sheared off over time i removed the cover and rejoined them and everything is fine now
