Hello, I am the proud owner of a Y reg 2001 MGF with 40K on the clock and have enjoyed driving and owning it so far though I have just noticed some mayo on the dipstick which I would like some advice about please.

When I started the car up today it felt very jumpy so I turned if off again and had a look at the coolant / dipstick. My coolant looks fine as far as I can tell I have topped it up maybe three or four times since purchashing the car last August but the coolant level always seems quite constant, but I guess you could say it has a very slow leak? On checking the dipstick I noticed a very small (a drop size) amount of white mayo on the very bottom of the dip stick. I drew out the dipstick a couple more times to check, most times it would always have a small drop of mayo right on the very bottom which I have never seen before with this car. The oil is a very dark colour though apart from the one small drop of mayo on the end. I started the car up again afterwards and ran it for a minute this time and this time it ran smoothly as normal. The car previous to this had been sitting for about 48 hours. This car normally gets light usage, with on average about a 5 mile round trip in traffic every week day and slightly less or more usage at the weekend depending on what I'm up to, it never get's a proper run though. Generally the car has been running fine. It has had a slight problem with the rev's swinging up down a little bit whilst sitting in traffic which I haven't had looked at. I did top up the oil about two weeks ago by about 500ml as it was looking a little bit low. (Though this might have just been as it wasn't on completely level ground.) Once on more level ground though topping up the oil brought it back into the middle of the high and low marker on the dipstick and I don't hink I have seen the swing in the rev's since.

I don't know much about cars but am aware of the HGF problems with this car from what I have read on the internet. Could this mayo be due to condensation, the cold weather we're having and not having a proper run for awhile? or is it a sign of something more serious?

I'm really not sure of what to do next? At the moment I have left the car sitting on my driveway. Should I give it a run and see what happens? (I don't want to damage the car or break down) Or should I take it down to my local garage to let them have a look at it? or should I have it towed to a garage rather than driving it?

I bought it from Autoplanet in Southampton and if it needs work I will take it back to them. I assume they will know what they're doing as it used to be a mg / rover dealership and talking to a mechanic there before he'd been working there since it was a rover dealership. I also have 3 years warranty on the car with them although I noticed my warranty it doesn't cover HGF. I don't think the car has ever had any previous problems looking through it's service history.

Sorry if all that's a bit long. Thought it was best to list everything that has gone on with the car recently. Any adivce would be very much appreciated.

hey there.why not just book her in to get checked over at the weekend?beter safe than sorry, chances are that no matter what advise any one gives via the internet its not going to be much better than someone looking at it in person.
i think if shes not using water and your getting the mayo then its because of your short trips.Take her for a blast up the motorway and then check.
not sure on the revs though. Im totally new to mgf`s so i will prob be corrected!!!

Chances are its just condensation. Give it a good long run and see if the mayo is there on your return. Just keep a close eye on the temp gauge and your coolant level.

As for the coolant loss - provided your mayo goes away after the run. Buy a new cap for the coolant tank, its probably the cause of your leak.

Good luck, and welcome. :)

Then what does your warranty cover?....

Given most after market warranties only cover major mechanical items, ie engine, gearbox, differential etc, and your warranty has removed the engine from this cover, TBH what you're left with is pretty worthless.

I would have another look at what you are/arn't covered for and if HGF is not covered then I would be asking for a refund on whatever the cost of this "3-Year warranty" was.

I say take it for a good run and see what happens. I've had my TF for about 8 months now, until the last few weeks its been doing around 100miles a day and never any change in water or oil levels the last three weeks it has mostly sat in the garage but once a week i have gone out to find a small drop of mayo on the stick so I'm just putting it down to lack of use at the minute. We are moving from Northern Ireland to SE England in 3/4 weeks time and it will be back to being used as my daily driver again so I'm assuming it will settle down once back in use. If you trust your garage see what they think if it will give you peace of mind but just don't let them think you are giving them a blank cheque.

Welcome Ben to .org......I concur, take her for a good long run....stick to the usual rules, ie....keep the revs below 3,000 rpm until the oil temp has climbed above 60c......check the dippy when you get back, dont forget weekly coolant checks:broon:......post some pics too.....we all like a look a newbies car:D:D

I had the same thing a while back, my car gets used very little and mostly sits tucked up in the garage during winter except for 3 mid week runs from the Forest to Southampton and back again. Mine (touch wood) just seems to be condensation as there are no other symptons, just take it for a good long run and wave if you see me! If you do want to get it checked over by someone other than Auto Planet let me know and i will give you the details of the MG specialist that i take mine to :petevick: welcome BTW!!

Hello,

Thanks for all your responses. I took the car on a 65 mile round trip to basingstoke today with a good stretch of motorway driving. The car was a little bit spluttery for the first minute when I started it up but was smooth after that for the rest of the journey. I also topped up my coolant a bit before leaving. I can never see where the min and max markers are on the mgf's header tank?

Anyway on returning the coolant was still at the same level and the dipstick still showed a little bit of mayo on the end the first time I drew it out.. See here for a photo:

I then drew it out another few times and this time no mayo. I think I will book the car in for it's service and make sure they change the oil. Should I tell the garage I've seen a little bit of white stuff on the dipstick?

Thanks for all your help I will have to post a pic of the car when it's a little bit cleaner.

Yes, go for an oil and filter change first but as Puds says, don't mention the mayo to the garage.

Just keep monitoring and remember to give it a longer run. Make sure your coolent level does not drop - it should be level with the centre seam of the coolant tank when cold - I keep mine 1cm above this as its easier to see.

When my HG started to go, the car drove as normal for a few weeks with just a slight coolant loss but the mayo was all the way up the dipstick, not just on the end.

this as happened to me recently and ive had the hg changed . only happens when cold and car has been stood. after a run theres no sign of mayo
its always concerning and you can get paranoid! when mine failed the mayo was the length of the dipstick and the coolant dissapeared over night with car stood on driveway .
