Induction kit or replacement filter?

okay, I've been reading around about filters etc and obviously getting a cold induction kit etc would be great, but a couple of people have said that for town driving I would be as well getting a simple performance replacement filter for the MGF.

Would this be the best option? I do nearly all city driving except for little trips now and again. i presume they would be less of a problem for warranty, insurance etc.

While I am here. Cheapskate that I am , i just painted the mesh at the fron with Chrome effect paint . So easy and looks good, even close up (pictures coming very soon if anyone's interested). Not sure of longevity etc.

Also, just had car serviced and got them to check leaking passenger side window. Replaced seal free of charge (apparently, although to me it looks like they have just reshaped the old seal somehow as it is not any newer or cleaner looking and also adjusted windows (I presue they meant the cheater although the lady at the desk was not sure) . Bring on the rain!!

Induction kit definately! A 'Peformance Panel' filter will make little or no difference. If anyone thinks otherwise, please comment!

Also, you could rig up a simple cold air feed from the sidevent to the cone to help supply the filter with some cooler air.

I have to say that fitting the replacement k&n element in my mk3 214si was a good move, I definately noticed the difference in power as it was the first mod that I done. I also recommended it to a mate with a F*rd Ka and she also noticed a considerable increase in'go'!

Does drilling not interfere with warranties etc?. Will drilling make a difference if the filter is in the warm engine bay anyway? (obviously it does because people do it! )

All i really want is a bit more noise and a bit more oomph for overtaking. nothing too drastic.

(and obviously for least money)

P.S. Here is DIY job on MGF mesh (plastikote chrome effect brush on paint). took about 5 minutes (4 of whcih was masking!!). Any comments - apart from cheapskate:lol:

Well on my ZR ive drilled the holes only on one side next to the battery, so this way it won't suck in hot air from the engine like induction kits do, plus it will ad induction noise. The best of both worlds!!:D :D

I like the sound of that. How many, what size of holes are we talking about?

I think I know whcih side to do it on in the MGF!

Perhaps I could get a spare one from somewhere and change it over for services/mot's etc.

I've just got a VVC MGF, so will be looking into this aswell!! :D

With the panel filter, you could also fit a second air box intake pipe from the side vent or from the underneath of the car up to the box and make a hole to poke it into the box, so twice the amount of air can enter, as thats what drilling achieves!

I've always wondered why the std throttle opening is say 48mm and the intake pipe for the air box is smaller than that, thus restricting IMO!!! :D

I thought about this aswell, but when i looked into it there is a reason why. Boules laws apply, he states that when air enters from a narrow duct into a large contained space, pressure increases. This is a very important factor when an engine is sucking in air, as the greater the pressure the better performance, hence a turbo/ supercharger.

Would it be possible to connect an intake pipe to the fron of the car, run it under the car and connect it to the filter to get forced air into it. I have never seen underneath the MGF so don't know if there is any room. Also, I preume the longer the intake, the more chance of turbulence in the airflow ?

Adding a ram air pipe to the air box is a good way to gain extra power. Don't worry about air flow or flys etc. the filter will strighten the air flow and bloke flys and other dirt.

If you can find somewhere to obtain ram air, then go for it.
