Did it turn over? If not, starter motor could be the culprit.

any beeping from the dash when ignition is turned on?? if so immobiliser issue. if not i would start looking at the starter motor. especially ther spade connectors and the earths. hope this helps mate

 

Hi guys. No beeping at all. Car locks and unlocks fine but when turning the key, nothing at all. No noise or anything. Starter motor you reckon? Connection problem a common problem on these cars? Thanks.

OK, if there isn't the beeping from the immobiliser then check all of the leads to the starter and the engine earths. If these are good then its probably the starter motor.

Eurocarparts do a decently priced one if you also use the discount code they have on the forum.

 

That's weird. When my starter was starting to go on the Turbo, it would not fire up sometimes but it would make a strange sort of clicking noise. Whereas the 200s don't give any such symptoms? Is this a common problem on these cars?

 

Our PG1 gear boxed ZS did exactly the same. Worked one day, the next, nothing, not even a click. Replaced it and no more problems.

 

It all depends on how the starter motor fails.

The connection to the starter solenoid is a common problem point on R65 cars because of the position of the motor and the spade connection isn't sealed.

 

Hey guys. Right, latest update.

Mate started his car fine this morning and many times since but we thought we'd have a look for the problem anyway. Checked the two connections on the starter motor. One has a bolt on it which we didn't take off but looked very clean and solid. The spade connector was also clean and tight but gave it a clean anyway. Again, was fine. Car started fine. My mate smacked the starter motor a few times and now it doesn't seem to start at all. It just gives it a simple click from the motor. Now, I'm guessing the starter motor is goosed but was it goosed before you smacked it of after? Thanks.

 

The solenoid valve is stuck which is most likely what was on its way out and why it wouldn't start before. Its the bit on the side of the starter.

Check the earth lead on the slam panel.

 

Earths seem fine.
Just to let you know guys, ordered a brand new starter motor today and my mate will get it fitted this week hopefully so I'll let you know how he gets on. Fingers crossed this will sort it.

 

Update chaps. Got hold of a brand new original starter motor from Best of British for £50 posted (not too shabby). My mate got his family mechanic to fit it. 15 minutes later car starts perfect now every time. It was indeed the starter. On the old one I noticed the spline bit at the end won't turn whereas the new one did. I'm guessing that is what was stuck and kept clicking. Anyway, he's all up and running. He's just gotta change his downpipe now! Thanks again for all your advise.
