If you put a G plate on your R reg car, it will make it look OLDER than it is. G is a 1990/1991 plate whilst R is a 1997/1998 plate.

The rule is designed to stop you putting a S,T,V,W,etc reg on your car to make it look like a younger vehicle and hence more valuable.... when it isn't.

 

No G will be fine as it will look older.

 

You can not make your car appear to be newer than it is. So if your car was registered in 1998 you wouldn't be allowed to put a 1999 or 2000 etc reg plate on your car.

My car was registered in 2004 but I drive it on a 1999 T plate, so my car actually looks older than it is, but it's a private plate. You can make a car look older but not newer.
