Hey mate, Will I need a 3 prong switch as my switch only has two?

 

Why do you need switches...? are you make your own light??

I bought my DRL's at a fairly good price and and they don't need switches, they automatically come on when engine is started, then dim down when lights are switched on.

the lights are made by well know company called ring. rrp £45 all in with fitting kit. no switches, and only 3 wires to connect.

they are really really bright to in the day, photo doesn't do it justice. at night then, when lights are turned on they dim to just 30% brightness.

 

Yea but what if you are on a budget and just get some DRL strips, Then you will need to make a switch?

DLR setup

List of thinks you need

Lots of wire (cant think of the wire i used but it need to be able to take the power)
Insulation tape
In-line fuse
12v switch
Tea

Step 1: Disconnect battery then start with the left hand first run the earth and positive wire to the right hand side

Step 2:Cut in to the right hand side earth and positive wires

Step 3:Join them up i did this by twisting the wire tougher

Step 4:Get some more long wire then join positive and earth from the right hand side

Step 5:We should have left joined to right then positive and earth wire coming out

Step 6:Tape all the joined wires tougher so you should only be left with + -

Step 7: On you positive wire cut the wire but leaving some wire off the end to add the inline fuse

Step 8:Fine a clean place to wire the earth on the car body work

Step 9:Get some wire add it to the earth wire then run that inside the car

Step 10:Same as 9 from the inline fuse and battery run the wire to the inside of the car

Step 11:Add positive and earth to a switch reconnect the battery and test

Step 12: Once all working have a large drink lol

I am thinking of fitting LED bulbs into my fog-lamps as I never use them and turning them into DRL's.

There still foglights mate regardless of the bulbs in them.

 

Here is a simple drawing if you are going to make your lights turn on and off with a switch.

 

Erm, am no electrician, but the battery is going directly to the lights regardless of the switch so will be on all the time won't they?

 

The bit that put me off today, other than how cold it was, is how to get the wire through to the cabin, to connect to the switch in my dash. Anyone got any easy routes for that?

Below the coolant header tank theres a rubbed covered hole, go through there and your wire will come out behind the glovebox.

 

Here, this is the only correct way of doing this...

If your DRL's are working then you MUST have done it like this, or Very very Similar, Like the others said and myself earlier, Your wiring just isnt possible to have worked.

yep paralel would be more apt but I was focusing more on the fact that he had the switch after the cicuit therefore a constant open circuit, sorry about the confusion

Mine are plugged into the sidelights and come on when I switch the lights on, I would rather have a switch like yours and am interested to see how you get on

 

This was my inspiration. I was going to finish this job and guide today, but my bloody back's gone

Maybe tomorrow, we'll see.

@Andywool, How did you attach your lights to the fog surrounds? And are the lights actually pointing forward or inwards? If you see what I mean.

mine are also wired to turn on with sidelights, mine are under the headlights but seeing theses pics i think they look good near the fog lights.

 

Correct me if im wrong, but that switch is never going to work,the way you have it wired up.

You need another live wire on the middle spade, the create the circuit.

1.Fused power in (you've wired)
2.power to source
3. Earth (you've wired)

 

Hi Davey,

I wired it all up and it works perfectly. Side lights off= nothing, side lights on= the DRLs are switchable using the switch.

I took a bunch of photos, just need to attach my LEDs to the fog surrounds then I can complete the guide.

Did you know that DLR is short for

DAY LIGHT RUNNING?

In other words these should come on with the ignition and dim or turn off when the headlights are on. They should be automatic, you shouldn't be able to manually switch them on and off.

Also are you sure you should be playing with electrics if you are going to twist wires togeather, either use crimp terminals or solder and heatshrink tubing.
