My alternator has seized solid on my MGF and I have spent weeks trying to get the lower bolt undone without success. I have now cut the alternator belt so the car starts and drives. I want to take it to a garage for them to change the alternator. My question is how far do you think I could drive without an alternator before the battery gives out! The garage is about 20 miles away.

Dont think you would make it 20 miles but what do I know.:dunno:

As the whole electrical system would be running solely from the battery then it would drain pretty quickly.:yikes:

It would be the most buttock clenching drive of your life, sod it I say go for it.:sofa:

Didnt someone say do something every day that scares you.:faint::sick2:

I recon you will make it... but i do tempt fate with stuff like that :p so dont take my word for it...

I'd look at it this way, the closer to the garage you drive it the shorter the distance it has to be towed, just remember to drive with the minimum of things being used. ie radio, heater, indicators if you can help it...

depends on how fresh your battery is too... :) hope this helps and puts silly ideas into your head... i promise we wont laugh if you battery does go flat mid way to the garage...

Depends on how strong your car's battery is. If battery is in good shape ( charge it if car not used for a while ) twenty miles in daylight with everything switched off should be easy for a good battery ... if battery is not up to scratch, can you borrow an known good one and use that...?

I'm assuming that ONLY the Alternator is driven on the belt you have cut...K-Series should be OK.

I know the answer to this due to bitter experience 2 weeks ago! My alternator failed at the roadside. Mr RAC men came and fitted a newly charged battery from his van and told me we would make 20 miles to my garage.
I had sidelights on becasue the weather was awful, occassional use of windscreen wipers and a couple of calls from my wife through the radio blue tooth to see how I was getting on (even though i told her not call me as was trying to save power :err:)
We made it and all electrics were still working. So unless Mr RAC man has super-power batteries I would say you would make it.

I wasn't in the MG I was in an old banger I bought for three months to see how my self-employment went but my belt once went it was about 15-20 miles I did make it but it was fraught and no chance of re-starting had it stalled.
Lights were hardly on when I got home, not to be recommended at all but it was pitch black and ******* down when I left work.

you will make it easy on a charged battery.

main power consumption is coil. so pick the straightest fastest route and you will be ok.

if you can when you start, can you jump start or use a booster as that is where most power goes.

don't of course use any electrics, radio, windows, wipers etc so pick a good day!.
