Has my ZR been clocked?

Hi everyone,

It's my first time here, having bought my 2002 MG ZR only yesterday. I bought it with just under 7,000 miles on it.

I've just been going through all the documentation, including my extended warranty but on there the mileage is 39,000!

I'm a little concered to say the least. There is no service history unfortunately. My other half is planning to ring the previous owner to ask how many miles they did. I'm also planning to go back to where I bought it from later. Obviously, I'm expecting them to tell me it was an admin error on the document, but it's listed twice as 39,000. once on the service page, and once on the car details page.

It's going to be my word against the garage isn't it?

How easy are they to clock nowadays?

Also, I probably would have bought it still with 39,000 because it's still less than what I sold my car for. I just feel very uneasy at the thought it's been tampered with.

Is there anything on the car or under the bonnet that would indicate it had been tampered with?

Many thanks everyone.

I think contacting the previous owner if possible will be your best bet. There might be an explanation along the lines of an engine change that you don't have the documentation for, however I'm not sure how honest the seller would have been if you were not informed of that and the lack of service history.

Only way to clock this car is to replace the ECU, its recorded in it as the clock is digital. When was the last MOT done as its recorded on the central database now. Wouldnt surprise me if this was a simple paperwork error. But best bet is to contact the previous owner (should be on the v5) and ask them how many miles they had done approximatly.

At the very least you should try to claim back the difference in price to account for mileage plus a little extra for goodwill. Any reputable dealer gets their cars HPI checked as a matter of routine so they're likely to have known the true mileage anyway. You should have got one done yourself as the fee would have included an indemnity against incorrect mileage IIRC.

Not uncommon, old lady driver using it on Sunday to get to Tesco and back and realised she should have bought a 25 instead.
Nearly bought a W plate Skoda Fabia last year instead of my 400, and in fairness I probably should have. Only went for the 400 as the stereo was easily changeable! It was immaculate, 16v version, flame red and only 5k on the clock :D

I wouldnt start worrying about it too much however 7K is low for a 2002.

Find out first from the previous owner/MOT and see.

I can not posibly imagine why someone would clock a 39K car as 39K is not really much in the first place.

Should it have been clocked i would think you would have some comeback.

Phil_216_ i am sure that the ECU etc contains millage and VIN information etc HOWEVER i believe that the digital clocks are no harder than analogue ones and easier in some respects
