Hard Top/Soft Top Seals. What's the difference?

I have recently discovered this site and found it very useful to solve all those anoying problems with my MG. I am in Australia and there is a lack of good MG knowledge and it is extremly time consuimg, difficult and expensive to get some parts, so any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

Having recently read some of the posts on leaking roofs I ordered some new seals for my MGTF to fix the leaking roof (the water comes down a gap between the top of the drivers side window, the roof and the top of the pillar supporting the windscreen).

I am fairly certain I have been given the RH cantrail seal for the hard top, but I ordered the RH cantrail seal for the soft top, is there an easy way to tell the difference between the 2 seals?

Thanks

My garage has done a large number of adjsutments for me as I am too scared to take the door apart. I have also recently inserted a tube down the gutter of the windscreen pillar seal to stop the door cheater from crushing the gutter. But the RH cantrail seal doesn't fit properly and never has so I'm told needs replacing (even though the car is 12 months old).

The problem we have in Australia is a 6-8 week wait for parts and they are very expensive (eg the Cantrail seal which sells for about GBP40 in the UK (which is ~A$100) costs over A$280 from the Australian parts provider) so I have been ordering parts from Moss in the UK over their internet site (as they are cheap - relative to Oz, and I get the parts in under 1 week).

Only problem is I think Moss have sent me a different part to what I ordered. Actually, based on your description, I know they have sent me the wrong part.

The part I have recieved is about 1 meter long and in addition to the lugs that are needed to affix the part there are also 3 small plastic pins which I have never seen before.

Looks like I may need to find another part supplier if the one I use can't be trusted to send the correct part. Any suggestions?

No, I wouldn't describe the profile as a D shape and I doubt it is for the back of a hard top as the seal isn't symmetrical (ie more lugs up one end than the other).

I would post a picture of it, but my profile on this site doesn't allow me to post pictures.

But it sounds like I have the wrong part, so I will have to send it back and then try and find another garrage/UK parts supplier willing to ship MG parts internationally.

These pics may help show the difference fairly easily
Now I am really confused. It can't be the hard top seal as that looks to be about 3 metres long. It looks most like the soft top seal, but it is in 1 piece not 2.

Oh well, I don't think there is an easy way to solve the mystery other than to send the part back or chop it in 2 and hope I can get it to fit.

I've just dug out a copy of TechBull 0016 Issued 10/12/97.

This refers to Hardtop Cantrail seals being replaced with modified types DSF101280PMD and DSF101290PMD. These appear to be long enough to fit round the HT window opening but not go round the back of the top i.e. 1 piece for the cantrail and b-post.

Have a look on Dieters site and search for Bulletin or similar as I'm sure I got it from him. Drag down the lefthand menus for HARDTOP; that leads to a page with details on converting from early - later hardtop fittings. May also have the link to the TechBull.

I am waiting for my UK supplier to track down a set of the later parts for my hardtop which has split rubber seals.

Good Luck.

John, Im not sure which part you are looking for, but I got the rear seal for my hardtop (now sold) a few months back and it was reduced from ÂŁ40-odd down to ÂŁ7, that was an MG dealer, not sure if there is still the sale on?

thnx. I'll give Mantles another call today to see how they are getting on. I suspect I may end up multi-sourcing. Possibly try ADAC in Birmingham - if they were making the hard tops they out to have the fittings.
