Sold with no warranty, found the car on internet so got it for a internet price. From a garage but I believe the terms of sale are sold as seen, so I have no come back!

But I can give it a go. Its just had a MOT an passed, so somebodies missed somthing

 

MOT's are only to say that the car was ok on that day and are not a guarantee.

 

the fact that it has a loud knocking on idle isn't a good sign mate. you should get that checked out in case it gets worse and does serious damage. would hate to hear that one of our beloved MG-R's is poorly sick mate

 

Does it make the tapping noise when its warm or just when you've started it up? Just that the vvc mechanism makes a moderate tapping noise when the engines cold.

 

Where are you located ?, If your in Nottinghamshire area I can hook you up, to read the codes, etc.

 

Whoa cheers for the offer ampthetex! But sadly no, Im in yorkshire. It knocks all the time tbh, been descibed as sounding like a diesel lmao, I think its worse wen its cold though, sounds like the manifold or something.

I think Ill give it a day and see what happens, I was praying for a common fault that could be easily fixed but oh well :/

If it does then that's a big problem.

If it sounds a bit like that but sort of like an old Fiesta then it's most likely to be the tappets.

A lot of K series suffer from that and it's not a problem if you can get used to it. Good way of testing is to rev the car soon as you start up to say 5k RPM, then re rev it when the engine is warm and see what difference you notice.

i would never trust anything that says sold as seen tbh, to me it pretty much says "there is something wrong with the car that we aren't telling you" and if i would buy it the minimum i would take is 3 moths warranty that covers everything serious.

if it was a wet day when the light came on it could be due to that, this happened on my 214 8v all i had to do was spray some WD40 on some wires and then it worked till the next big puddle

 

might be ****ty leads or blocked fuel filter causing rough idle. the code might just need clearing. get it cleared and see if it comes back. job done.

dont go reading too much into it until the code has come back.

 

check your citizens advice bureau. got a feeling that there is no such thing as sold as seen any more. if its sold as spares or repair thats a different matter.

 

Ooo I'm going to ring the garage tomorrow and see what they say. As now I have restricted performance!! It slows acceleration after about 5000rpm, and totally stops at 6500! It needs sorting, also the front silencer sounds like a nail in a tin can! Especially at low revs, I've bought a right shed guys Just needs some tlc

 

Oh yer I am located in Dewsbury on the outskirts of Wakefield touche, and I've watched that piston slap video, and mine does sound like that on tick over!! Just not as loud, and it sounds totally normal when revved so I don't think I have that problem. Thank god!

 

Glad to hear it doesn't sound as bad as in the vid, that's my car about 12 months ago not long after I'd bought it.

The engine management light would seem to randomly come on, when the car was plugged into diagnostic software it indicated a problem with the 2nd lambda sensor, but no matter what we did the light would come on again after a day or two and indicate the same problem.

Eventually the engine suffered piston ring failure, or the symptoms would suggest so, with the eventual outcome being a replacement engine and no more engine management light (new pistons and rings where installed under warranty but we still had problems, so a new engine was sourced).

Also I think all garages that sell cars have to give 1 months warranty but check with trading standards

 

6,500rpm rev limiter is brought in when the system detects an issue related to the VVC mechs usually.

 

oh dear that's never a good sign as anything to do with the mechs is expensive isn't it?
