Differences between LHD and RHD MGF/TF pedal boxes

I learned something new today. I have a LHD car and I noticed that my clutch pedal return spring was missing, so I ordered one. When I went to install it, I realized that there is no bracket attached to the clutch pedal, like the RHD cars, and so there is no way to attach a clutch pedal return spring to LHD pedal boxes. I think the reason for this is the space between the clutch pedal arm and the steering rack is too close to allow for the spring. So, in short, RHD cars have clutch pedal return springs and LHD do not. I am not sure if this changed with the post 2005 pedal boxes when the pedal box was slightly revised (and probably made in China).

So what returns the pedal then?

Please see the attached image that I was able to find on the internet that compares the LHD vs RHD pedal boxes. The differences are actually quite significant. The bracket for the spring attachment is present on the mounting bracket but is not present on the clutch pedal arm. Based on what I observed from looking at the pedals on my car, I assume that this was done for clearance from the steering column. There is just not enough room for the spring, which is larger than it looks in the photos. There is some amount of spring on a LHD car (to answer your question IanMc - it must be the clutch mechanism itself that provides the spring), but I imagine that it must be stronger / better on the RHD cars that has a spring added to the pedal mechanism. Too bad MGR could not have figured out a solution for LHD cars. I guess no one noticed at the time...

I also find the LHD pedals (clutch and brake) to be somewhat 'low' on the foot (i.e. makes contact closer to the arch of my foot instead of closer the ball of my foot). I wonder if this pedal placement is different on RHD cars (I do not have usually large feet).

RHD cars also have a footrest, which was not used on LHD car, probably due to the differences in shape of the footwell areas.

I do not know whether you have a MGF but according to my Microfich from circa 2000, the clutchSpring in the MGF is the same - EJP 1380.

The pedal assembly do have different part numbers RHD SUC100281 PMA, LHD SUC100292 PMA.

In the photograph you have attached, the LHD has no spring but this is at odds with the microfiche and other MG parts list that I have.

Part numbers have changed since 2000 but here is the rimmer parts list for a LHD pedal box (TF and F the same), May help MGF and MG TF Clutch Pedal | Rimmer Bros

Conclusion: There is a clutch return spring even for LHD cars.

Hi Julian,

I have a 2004 MG TF. I have recently crawled under the footwell and can confirm that my pedals look the same as the LHD ones in the photo. I have the spring and want to fit it and there simply is nowhere to attach it. There is definitely no bracket on the pedal arm like the RHD pedal in the photo.

That said, you are from CH and probably have a LHD car. Does your car have the spring? Is it an MGF or MG TF? If your car has the spring, perhaps there is a way to attach it without the RHD clutch pedal arm bracket that I do not understand. I could not find any holes in my clutch pedal arm but perhaps missed them?

In regard to the photos of the LHD pedal box in the Rimmers catalog, it looks like the later pedals for the late 'Chinese' MG TFs (note style of the pedal pads). It does however have the bracket for the spring from what I can tell from the photos. Were any of the 'Chinese' MG TFs ever actually available in LHD - I thought they were all RHD?

I have attached photos of my clutch pedal. Unless I am missing something, it looks identical to the LHD pedal in my prior post. I do not see any hole or bracket for the spring to attach to the pedal.

Pete,

I think the only difference was the design of the pedal pads was different. They did away with the rubber pedal pad covers for something a bit sportier looking. That said, I have never tried either RHD setup so perhaps there was some other difference.

Since you have both LHD and RHD pedals, can confirm if there is a difference in the spring / tension of the clutch pedal of the 2 cars, based on what was discussed above?
