Dangly bits and rusty nuts!

Just had a quick look over my car this morning and noticed that all my wheel nuts excluding the security lock nut are rusty as hell. The car is only 18 months old, has anyone else got rusty nuts?

Also at the front of the car on the drivers side visible through the mesh in the front grill I have a wire with some kind of connector block about an inch and a half in size hanging down. All my lights are working fine etc does anyone have a clue what this could be?

I can help with the rusty nuts question, mine rusted I had them replaced under warranty and they rusted again. They are now painted with Hammerite black and look good. Put in a search for rusty nuts or wheel nuts something will probably come up because its been mentioned in the past on these forums.

Ken, was that brushed on or sprayed on hammerite? Mine are the same and need a similar treatment. Although I might go with silver. Of course I can't do all at once as I have no jack, so will rotate one or two from each wheel and do them in 'shifts'! :) :)

I used the hammered finish and not the smooth one. It was just brushed on and it took only an hour to do all wheels. I tried the silver colour but I didn't like it. Someone told me the Cowley built cars had black nuts so I just did them black. They look good against the alloy.

My 75's wheel nuts are rusty and the car is only six months old, dealer warranty did not cover supplying replacements so I've had a complete set chrome plated but not fitted them yet due to all the salt on the roads.
Sorry to be a bearer of bad tidings, but it isn't a good plan to chrome plate the wheel bolts. Firstly it will greatly change the torque / tension relationship so you will most likely find that the bolt clamp load reduces. Secondly, the chroming process on high strength bolts indroduces hydrogen embrittlement which can cause the bolt to snap in service. The best bet is to source some of the earlier black bolts as suggested above, or to try and get some covers for the heads.

My nuts are all fine no rust on them at all! Apart from the BMW locking wheel nuts they are starting to rust a bit now!

:bgrin:
The earlier ones are fine Alex its the later ones that went rusty. I believe mine was the first year the nuts were changed which was 03. Sometimes MGR shot themselves in the foot by changing things to cheaper materials with only costs being taken into account. In a few months time I will probably be replacing my little Metro with an early Cowley 75 so its then I will really notice the difference between the two 75s. My only fear is I may prefer the earlier one to mine!

A question for those of you with the painful disease of rusty nuts? Have you used acidic wheel cleaner products (Wonderwheels etc)?

I think the later wheel bolts were probably coated in a mechanically applied zinc rich coating called Dacromet which normally works very well if properly done. However, the chemicals in wheel cleaners are pretty good at zinc removal, not just on bolts but on calipers and the rear hub / disc zinc rich paint.

Personally having seen the damage that wheel cleaners cause I would never use them while the wheel was in situ.

Thanks for that, I knew they were not that good for wheels but I never knew the reason for it.

So you will have 2 R75's!

How cool!

Good luck to you!
I think so Alex, the Metro I use for work because its parked between coaches and buses which are always getting shunted around the yard. The Metro I just dump there but parking the 75 would not be an option. If I could find a real cheap 75 I would get it as I could then dump it wherever and not worry too much about it.
