Just been told that MGR have laid off all contractors pending a future anouncement. Any ideas?

At least any development work done by TWR is still owned by MGR.
Oh and why have certain member(s) of this forum seem to delight in others misfortune? Living in a city that has had much of its big employers shutting down (usually for the benefit of shareholders profits I might add) it breaks my heart to hear of a struggling British manufacturer and threats of job losses.
A country that relies on overseas companies for its jobs has no control and can easily be manipulated into giving big consessions which make our home grown industry even less competitive.
Sorry to rant guys, some peoples comments are at best childish and often downright offensive

Agreed Simon.

Living in Northern Ireland, every time I drive past the largest shipyard in the United Kingdom and see it lying empty, I am almost moved to tears.

From my perspective there are several problems,

1. UK labour laws allow companies to basically make people redundant as and when they please. I understand the situation is different in France for example!

2. We need to join the Euro, the high value of the pound is killing exports. But the fact is we need to import so much stuff these days that a high pound makes imports seem cheap and thus inflation low.

3. The plain fact is that there are'nt very many British manufacturing companies left these days. And those that are left are having a really hard time because nobody cares about UK manufacturing.

4. The Financial institution distort the whole economy, the bottom line is everything. Take Black and Decker as an example. A profitable American owned company operating in the UK. They move most manufacturing to eastern Europe in order to make MORE money! Who's fault is this? It is all done to please shareholders and investors IMHO!

It really pisses me off!!!!

contractor layoffs

I read elsewhere about Toyota Prius-based prototypes seen around Longbridge.

Speculation.

1. MGR about to die. Hence shutdowns, layoffs, non-showings of ZTV8's etc.

2. Failure of China Brilliance and now Poland deals means major rethink.

3. New collaborative possibility or even takeover involving Toyota.

4. Extension of tie-up with Tata.

5. None of the above.

What do others think?

Take Coventry as an example
Massey Ferguson closing
Rolls Royce closed one and will close the other site (with full order books)
Jaguar could very well close one in Coventry.
Marconi, not long left.
Matrix Churchil - of Iraqi supergun fame. Gone

All great products Mega, but ill management and shareholder views have done them in.

Are MGR products that bad? They don't seem any better or any worse than other popular makes to me.
Try owning a Ducatti motorbike, all the troubles and niggles with them drive you mad, but as it's Italian they call it character!
It's a state of mind.

Being a Northerner I really can sympathise with blokes like those at Midland Gears. And I'm not Xenophobic but when I hear idiots who suggest we abandon low ‘added-value’, rust-belt industries like (car) manufacturing to concentrate on a ‘service lead’ economy and let manufacturers from our foreign competitors supply us with everything a modern country needs just makes me livid.

Why service industry? So we can all live Maggies dream, having jobs driving around in German or French vans delivering Jap televisions, German dishwashers Italian ovens, or Scandinavian furniture to the nation? Or working for an American fast-food chain or doing 'something' in The City, which now contributes to a third of our GDP. Mind you any job in The City will probably entail working for American, Japanese or German owned institution, because these nations looked after their manufacturing industries so well that they made so much money that THEY now own The City!

Amongst the largest corporations in the world, many of the real giants are car manufacturers. They each give employment to hundreds of thousands of people both directly and indirectly, their products are purchased by millions, their turnover is measured in billions and their success is a source of pride to entire (foreign) nations. They have to operate at the cutting-edge of manufacturing technology, robotics, computing, metalurgy, glass, chemicals, you name it, car industries need it. Rust belt my a**se!

Providing increasingly sophisticated products in order to survive. is not something we’re known for in this country I accept, but are we just going to roll over and give up? This isn’t just like being beaten in the World Cup by the Germans again, "Oh well, It's just a game"...having our industries crushingly, humilliatingly slaughtered by the foreign competition again ain't clever and it ain't funny.

If im not mistaken (which i usually am!) the uk has provided some impressively sophisticated products...... the CD the hard disk, the digital calculator.. to name but a few, the problem is that these people that invent such things get NO BACKING from the government and have to take the business to the US or Japan. There is a culture in the uk that you must get any invested money back ASAP regardless of the long term prospects of the invention..... and that runs in companies too..... there are too many companies run by accountants... that worry about turnover and share value, what ever happened to concentrating on decent quality products and making a decent profit?

Just as an example i used to work for a company whose target was to turnover 0.5m a month, one month we actually did it..... however, it cost us 0.67m to do it, because the work was rushed and poor quality, so we made a profit of -0.17m, and surprise surprise, the sales guys and directors got a bonus because they hit their target........ just my two penneth!

Also one last thing, as i am forever watching the engineering job market and have several contractor friends, MG are not the only people laying contractors off there are very very few contracts around. plus why the hell would they pay £27-30ph minimum, when, as has alredy been said, they can get permanent staff for half that!

Erm, all contractors laid off pending an announcement ................. speaking as one who has been through a corporate collapse, I can only say this is not a good sign.

The best scenario might be that there is going to be an announcement about Poland (now due), or possibly about TWR, or Midland Gear.
Not necessarily....Barclays have just binned a load of contractors, and as far as Im aware they're not in difficulties.
