For a while now, me and my brother have been looking to put together our own road legal track car as we don't really fancy thrashing our daily runarounds on a circuit every few months, on top of the constant maintenance required for me to do 4000 miles a month.

As I now own a diesel and I am selling the BRM, I decided now was the right time to get started.
As we are not made of money, but still want to do it properly, we will be doing it on a realistic budget bit by bit over a few months.

We've looked for various bubble MG/Rovers to convert to a track-specific car, and recently found the perfect candidate.

It's Great-Kahn's old R25. It's a 3-door, silver, 1.4 with the early signs of HGF

:D

We recently took delivery of the car and have been breaking the tools out at the weekend, so here are some piccy's of the progress so far...

When we got it:

I'm a bit gutted tbh. Not a single coin under the seats / carpet. You can tell the car was really well looked after.
The interior isn't being chucked as it's in much better nick than the crap thats in my diesel.

Next to come will be the suspension hopefully, and moar lightweighting..

The long term plans include:
Straights
Fitting 282 brake setup
GAZ Coilovers
Roll cage
Racing seats
VVC engine with ITB's & Emerald ECU
LSD
Custom exhaust
Aerodynamic tweaks

Shall this machine be ready in time for Christmas and will it be capable of flying? Poor Rudolph has Swine Flu you see and I have an awful lot of presents to deliver to the good boys and girls this Christmas. Perhaps I may borrow this on the night of Christmas Eve?

Remember boys and girls, Santa Claus likes lovely homemade mince pies, don't forget.

 wtf.....

Nice little side-project! :broon: Tell you what, though, looking at the route the pipe for the rear screenwasher, no wonder it breaks all the darn time! :twak:

On the wheel front, i'd expect the 16" hairpins would be better, the smaller diameter rim will accelerate faster, plus they would be marginally lighter than 17's i'd expect. Of course, you could always go for some ultra-light weight wheels of a different ilk entirely! :D

Looking good so far, doing similar to what I do at work :p (except I prepare Rally cars, not track cars :D).

When you get round to buying a cage, I'd recommend a company called "Fabricage", we use them for all the rally ZR's and 25's we prepare, and the majority of other preparers I know use them too :D. You're looking around ÂŁ500 for a custom made 25/ZR cage :)

Nice job catterall1 so far dewiper the back as well ,damn right with the sound deadening will be a fair bit of weight i know in a clio it shaves off 30kg don't forget the soundproofing under the bonnet are you going the full length with stripping the dash as well and remove the aircon unit.

Just a suggestion for other mods strut braces, numan/piper 285 cams :naughty: would go down a treat if your going ITB's.

good luck in your conquest

Not decided yet.
It would be educational to try and get the 1.4 fixed and running again.
It depends on the availability of a vvc engine.

We did think of changing the pisons and liners from a 1.6 block, and whapping in some 285's, and using that for a bit, but for the money involved a vvc engine swap will be by far more bang per buck.

Update!

Its been snowing.
Car starts and runs fine though :D
No work done though :dddc:

Thats the worst update, EVER !!!

Have you checked the rules on what you can and cannot do to a car for track days, your car will need an MOT

Good luck with your adventure.

Well if its go no seats in the back I doubt they need seat belts lol, but its a good point mate, i'm sure it will pass stripped out as long as the seats fitted have an MOT, I can get hold of a Car Transporter if you want to Avoid Road Tax !!!

Have you checked the rules on what you can and cannot do to a car for track days, your car will need an MOT, or if it’s a race/track car, it should be able to pass scrutineering at a race meeting. Before you go too far with your alterations decide on the type of track day racing you want to do and find out as much detail as possible.
My sons and I did it this year in a Rover 25, now we have just bought a Rover 220 turbo coupe for the track day in January. Good luck with your adventure.
