Hi my sister moved to France she has left her Rover 75 V6 with us ,the car has not been started for about 10 months , she now wants to come and take her car so I tried to start it but the battery was dead so I jumped it. The car only clicks each time I turn the key. I then bought a new battery of the right spec but the car still does not start the engine only clicks but all the lights come on etc. Would someone know why?
Thanks.
Christian.

Possibly the starter motor is sticky, if its a manual, put the car in 5th gear and rock it back and forth sometimes this will free a sticky starter motor. Obviously only do this if on a level surface as the handbrake needs to be off. Then try starting the car again, obviously handbrake on and in neutral.

Sometimes helps if the clutch is down as the gearbox isnt being turned aswell.

Otherwise...jump start it and leave it running.

Another common problem we used to have when i was in the trade (a gazillion years ago) was corroded earth strap - as well as checking battery connections are sound there is a seperate earth strap between body and engine - dunno where on 75 but the primary function is earth return for the starter motor - it should be easy to see - just make sure it's nice an tight & clean

But you said it started when jump started but not if just the battery on its own?

If that is the case then its probably corroded terminals, sticky solenoid on the starter motor, or combo of both.

Do you have the old battery you took off? Check the labels between the old battery and the new one to check its the same strength.

Has the car really not been started at all in 10 months?

The clicking noise you hear when trying to start the car indicates a fault with the starter motor solenoid, either worn contacts or more likely to be poor electrical terminal connections to starter motor & or its solenoid,

Find the starter motor & check clean all electrical connections is your first move, at the motor/solenoid.or spray connections with WD40
Starter solenoid has to operate before the starter motor can turn the engine over to fire up.

Actualy removing the starter motor from the car & then refitting could well clear an earthing problem, insulate all terminals as removed to eliminate electrical arcing if you do not wish to disconnect your new battery for any reason

thanks for the vote of confidence jimbo.
My experience is with Rover P6 V8 engines, they do not like being left for long without being regularily started up.

Comment about water in Plennum is also very valid but for different reasons, well worth a check as stated,
However it is obvious that battery power is getting as far as the starter motor!

PS Might just jar sticky contacts in starter solenoid by hitting casing gently! with a rubber hammer.
If all else fails remove starter & get it bench tested by an Auto electrical outfit

Redmagicspoon, a Scot in Germany had identical problems mentioned here last year, solved with a solenoid repair kit from ebay.
Seems your auto elects charge reasonable prices.

There is a thread running here where members are logging recommended garages, auto elects are not two a penny, suggest you offer yours to that thread

Well Flyer, she is a supporter---- lets hope she puts us out of our misery with some feedback lol
Keep punching!
