Because of the following
hi Upon trying to start my 2000 Rover 75 connosieur 2.5cc petrol today i found that nothing happened no ignition lights and nothing when I turned the key.
I immediately thought a dead battery and tried jump leads but to no avail. I then realised that the interior light and door locks etc along with alarm all seemed to function correct I then tried the lights and the side lights came on as did the backgound lights for the instrument cluster. Still no warning lights etc.
The car has stood for only 36 hours and when parked on christmas eve was fine. Dont think that we have had any rain since either. I am at a total loss as to what can be wrong and just wondered if there is a fuse or something that may need checking
I have tried all suggestions on my other thread and having read through a lot of history on this site i thought that maybe this could be the problem
Cheers

Hi John,

It sounds like it could be one of the fuses in the underbonnet fuse box, in front of the battery. Either one of the large fusible links, or the engine fues in the box, indicated as such on the lid diagram.

Failing that an earth has been lost, or another ECU has been damaged by all the jump starting you've tried & the problem could be more than one thing. The sensitive electronics on modern cars don't take kindly to jump starting or being started from a boost pack, yet the breakdown organisations still persist in doing it.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!

I'm with you Kieth, This is not a BCU problem. Sounds more like the immobliser ECU or a failed earth somwhere.

The BCU controls your lights and locking and stuff so if these are still working then the BCU you can be dead. Now I know some just loose certain functions as mine lost the use of the head lamp washers and the rain sensor.

But with it not starting I would look else where. I dont suppose any connector has come undone as some on the 75 are quite crude.

I will dig out my Rover fault finding guide for the 75 later.

So is just the dash instruments dead and the car wont start,

Hi,
Sorry guys I live in Northumberland about 14 miles north of Newcastle.

Yes the dash lights are all dead and no ignition also which i find strange is that the radio is dead too before it worked ignition off

Have checked all fuses under the engine fuse box all appear ok and i have continuity at all fuse links.

All help really appreciated as i cant get an auto electrician with diagnostic equpiment until after the holidays

If the spindle that connects the ignition barrel to the actual electrical switch has broken/come off/stopped turning the switch. Then you would be able to turn the key & nothing else would happen, i.e. no lights, no starter or anything.

Stranger things HAVE happened.

Well I looked through the diagnostic pages and it says the following,

Weak battery, broken ignition unit (god knows what that is), fault with ignition switch or connection and my fave, a sensor has broken (diag required).

Now I think we can rule the battery out as other bits work fine, ignition can also be ruled out as we are not getting that far.

Could be the switch or a sensor.

No way to tell without getting a multi-meter and testing the ignition switch. Must stress though if that turns out to be the fault it will be the first 75/ZT I have heard about with a faulty switch.

Hi Have checked the ignition switch with multimeter and it seems fine.
Really had ruled that out anyways as the radio is not working.
Still believe in my mind that it must be some sensor/fuse but are there any others that are not in either fuse box under bonnet or under glove box??
Or maybe it is a faulty earth either way I am so frustrated
Thanks guys

Ok, but just remember the stereo should only work for an hour after the ignition is switched off. Because it does not work again now would say it's not getting power, controlled via the switch and hench it wont come on or even engage the hour timer.

No more fuses expect for the under bonnet ones and glovebox area ones.

Make a list of what works and what does not, with and without the ignition on and off.

I will dig out earth refrences for you also.
