Hi guys,

My MOT is due and I think I've found a failure I need to fix. Basically in the attached image (found online) you can see the two bolts going into the slam panel to secure the headlight from movement, well the inner one (closest to the grill) on my drivers sides broken, I have the piece but can't get it to stay secure.

Anyone got any ideas on how to do this as I don't want to have to replace the whole headlight.

Thanks

Carl

I move headlights when I test them to see if they are insecure or broken like this...

I test properly though, It IS a fail and if it passes well done, you got a poor tester, what else did he miss ;)

To plastic weld you get a hot soldering iron and a piece of fairly decent plastic and weld/melt it onto the crack ;)

Just something that isn't flimsy, it's not guaranteed to work but worth a shot, I have a pair of lights one is broken, If it's not the drivers side your welcome to have it free as it's only gonna be thrown away, just pay the postage.

Oh cool mate thanks for the link, does this just stick over the two parts that have broken away and then you simply put the bolt through the hole into the slam panel as it was? What's this stuff made of metal and where can I get it (or just online) ?

The band is not self adhesive. It is flexible metal and cuts with lightweight snips or hacksaw. It is narrower than the bracket arms and fitted comfortably inside my bracket moulded reinforcers.
I cut a length to bridge the two parts, drilled 2 small holes in the lamp bracket arms one each side of the break & coresponding to the holes in the band. I then stuck it on with epoxy putty (which also fills any voids) & reinforced/supported by small screws. The screws hold the repair together whilst the epoxy cures. Don`t forget to clean and rough up the surfaces so the epoxy bonds well.
I didn`t extend the strip to the bracket fixing screw (it was the lower arm/lug) but assuming the holes in the band are big enough can`t see why not.
The band should be available from electrical & builders merchants and from the link I gave (ÂŁ10 min. order threshold for free next day delivery - they do quite a few automotive goodies - spray underbody wax, brake cleaner to mention a couple, so getting to a tenner should not be a problem).
Hope this has helped.

Morning all

Firstly I got to work as explained by Pengy and it was going well and went relatively well but I was unsure about how long it would last plastic weed as I had to do it with the light on the car still so I also attached some screwed on metal brackets as shown in the images.

After all this I can see the light beams are not in line (so is this a fail or an alteration as part of the mot)?

Please see images below of fix and light beams, the first light shot is main and the second full beam.

Can someone tell me how to set these up myself if I need to for an mot, thanks

See if you can slacken the bolts and carefully push the headlight upwards bringing the patterns closer together, once sort of close to each other you can ask the tester to adjust the pattern with the actual adjusters during the test,

Normally they would do it for free, some places don't.

I'll look see which headlight I have spare later for you.

So am I right the drivers side looks too high? is it only in image two (full beam on)?

Do you mean the two bolts I have shown in my pics? slacken them off? how do I being the light up as I can't seem to get it to move at all apart from back and forward a bit, but not enough o really make a difference...

Thanks reg light also
