And for my next project....

Hi guys. Once I've finished off the glass rear, and popped on the TF front I have a new project in mind.

When I had my mini I made up a trailer from the back of another mini that had been whacked in the front - now I want to do it again to an F.

I've got bugger all space in the rear, so I thought a small trailer would be cool, especially if I want to take 'Meg' onto the continent travelling. So... if anyone has or knows of a CHEAP rear section (which will basically be everything from the rear of the door back NOT including engine/gearbox) then let me know. I think a normal trailer would look crap, but a cute 'MGFrailer' would look super cool.... Oh god I feel another money pit coming on!

Hehe I love ot be different! The mini was the same rear subframe set up as the MGF and the Metro - offially you shoudlnt, but as long as you dont try to pull a caravan you should be fine! (as long as some strengthening of the subframe is done with cross braces etc. should be no probs i feel)

I´ve seen this on an MGB GT in MGworld magazine. It had RV8 bumpers and fenders. Looked good.

Germans also do this a lot. Especially with the VW Passat. I even saw one that had the rear seats stlill in. To what extend this is still legal, I don´t know. But in Germany it wouldn´t be roadworthy without TÜV check. So...

maybe Herbie can shed a little light on the subject.

Although ive just had a look at the handbook as per James and it does say NO towing...

QUOTE:

Load Carrying

The MGF is not designed as a load carrying
vehicle, and owners should be aware of the
following restrictions.
DO NOT fit a tow bar, or use the rear towing
eyes for towing a luggage trailer or similar
vehicle (the towing eyes fitted to the MGF are
for vehicle recovery and lashing purposes
only).
DO NOT exceed loads of 35 kg (77 lb) either
inside the luggage compartment, on an
approved accessory luggage rack secured to
the boot lid, or a comibination of both. Loads
exceeding this figure will affect the height of
the headlight beams, possibly dazzling other
road users.
DO NOT use the underbonnet compartment
for carrying luggage; this area of the car is
specifically designed to absorb impacts in
road accident situations. Items of luggage in
the underbonnet compartment could impair
the crash worthiness of the car and also
affect the safe operation of airbag SRS
equipment.
DO NOT obstruct the wire engine guard when
loading the luggage compartment.

I have read the manual too... but then back in the days of the 'real' mni that wasn't supposed to tow either, and loads of us had trailers! It's the same setup.

I can understand that it is certainly NOT set up to handle towing heavy stuff as it is. Even with suppport it's not that strong, but with a bit of ingenuity, and some safety braces I cant see a problem. I guess also some of the reason they say that is because of two things:

a. They didnt make the back strong enough and therefore didnt think about making a towing system to cope with this,

and (most probably)

b. Didnt think that anyone with a 'sports' car woudl want to tow anything so didn't bother anyhow.

I must say that I REALLY like that MGRV8 trailer - very clever use of an old B indeed!! Hang on - the B's weren't built to tow either were they? Hmmmm....

The handbook states do not try towing because MG Rover couldn't be bothered but because the method of construction and dynamics of the car is totally unsuited to such a task.
The MGB was totally different.
Subframes are unsuitable to take those loads, certainly not direct attachment of tow bars and the bodyshell has no appropiate load points.
All tow bars are designed with max nose weights, how could you calculate that? There are a lot of dynamics envolved with towing that would take too long to cover here and then there's insurance.........

IIRC.....at the first Northampton meet.....there was a guy who came across from Towcester......he has a towbar on his TF.....IMHO.....uuuuuurgh.....dont do it.....it would look as stupid as a 3 wheeled gold wing....or a bike pulling a trailer....these things are just NOT meant to be:daft::daft::daft:

Woud be a bit silly to attach a broken MGF to the back of your car and break your own MGF by doing so...

But from the looks of your posts, you're not going to listen to the safety, insurance, and damage aspects of towing half a car on the back of your's... so I say go for it, just don't crash into anyone or your insurance will not pay out.... and you'll end up with a nackered MGF and you'll be banned from driving.

I think I like the luggage rack option...

So are we condemning all the mini owners over the last 40 years who have done the same thing? I wonder how many accidents there have been with trailers on minis?

The subframe on them was not designed to handle a tow bar either, but we made sure we didn't build stupid huge trailers, drove them sensibly, and checked our cars regularly.

Often I feel it is how the car is driven. If you have a car that is designed to have a tow bar, and drive like an idiot, you will have more chance of crashing and killing someone.

Let's face it, simply putting the WRONG TYRES on an MGF is gonna make it more dangerous to drive than a slow drive with a trailer!! But like I say - if the insurance say no i'm not stupid, it wont see the light of day. Plus to all those who are saying 'dont do it to an MGF' - surely its better than the poor thing languishing in a scrap yard only to end up in a crusher!

If it becomes a trailer how would it still be a MGF? Its surely then just a home made trailer that has the silhouette of the arse end of a F :dunno: .
To be practical as a trailer all the inside structure, that being the boot to engine fire wall and inner wheel archs etc will have to be cut out just leaving the outer panels.
How is all that able to be considered to be saving a MGF from the crusher?:dunno:

The F will be perfectly capable of towing a trailer after all I have evidence of an F towing a car trailer with another on it without any problems!

As for insurance provided the insurance Co. know about it and are happy then there isn't a problem although future MoT's could be.

Oh blimey - all I wamnted to do was mention what i would do next - now its a argument as to whether it's right, legal, safe, 'saving an MGF', you name it.
I wouldn't dream of telling someone not to make some wierd alteration to their F or TF if that's what they feel happpy with.
Everyone has a different idea of what is good and what is awful - but as owners we should be a COMMUNITY not a bunch of people *****ing at each other if we dont personally like the idea. If you dont like the idea of a trailer, that's fine by me, everyone is different... just I think I like the idea.
Thanks to Chris and Pete by the way for trying to bring some sense back to this thread.

There seems ot be a few "on edge" people around the last week or so. Must have bene all the sun. A few entertaining threads have suddenly become irrational and aggressive for no reason :irked:

Its the same with all mods. IF you like it, do it!! (hell, have you seen my seats ), just make sure you are not going to damage the car and break any laws.
