Air Bag Disablement

I wanted to disable the passenger Airbag (Rover 200) to allow a baby carry cot to be placed on the front seat (belted in). I was advised by an expert that the easiest way was to disable the whole system by removing the fuse.
This I have done but am uneasy about it.
By removing the fuse have I completely disabled the system?
Any advice welcomed - thanks.

I understand your point although I do think that maybe more is made of this than is necessary.
All my research leads me to believe that a correctly fitted, rear facing, seat in the front is perfectly safe as long as the Air Bag is disabled which is the point of my post.
However, the baby is always put in the back if there is another passenger in the car to console him and keep him amused should he become upset - which he often does in traffic.

Blimey, Jack sleeps in the car, always has done, guess we were lucky, I just used to talk to him and he was happy enough, but I can see your predicament.
If i was in your position, I'd take the car to an XPart service centre and get them to disable it rather then going for the ghetto fix here. Peice of mind if nothing else.

Marc used to sleep in the car but now he's a little bit older (7 months) he likes to look out the windows and keeps himself amused :D

I wouldn't play around with anything to do with the safety system. Get it done properly just in case.

It's not a legal requirement, no but IMO it should be. Rover were really stingey with the passenger's airbags and only ever fitted them as standard on the 25 iXL and later SXi/GXi models in the UK. They were optional on all other models.

what research did you do? just out of interest...
i think kids are generally safer in the back...
as for amusing and consoling? mine just had to get used to it! they had the stick-on-the-windows winnie the poohs, all sorts of stupid things to keep them from screaming in your ear too much...

then i just turned up the music when they drove me nuts...it was all short term...they realised that my attention was on the road, not on them...and theyre still in the back...but with i-pods now :)

but if you insist, better to go to the service centre as mentioned...

Tests have proven without doubt that baby seats are far less safe in the front than the rear. Even in rear facing seats.

Don't forget to inform your insurer if you are disbling the airbag system. They may even refuse to cover it, but better to find out now than if you have an accident.

I would say yes it would disable the whole system, isn't that kind of obvious? They wouldn't put in separate fuses for each air bag etc. If they did then you would have the 'SRS' symbol on your dash all of the time saying that there was a problem in the system.

I would think the only proper way of disabling that one airbag for the passenger seat would be if there was a switch specifically for that job as you can find in some other makes of car, but i don't think this can be done the the rover 200's. The system will always think there is a problem if you just simply unplug for instance.

Can i just ask, are you sure you have a passenger airbag? Not meaning to make you sound stupid but does it say it on the air bag? The reason i ask is because i have what looks like an airbag on the dash but has no writing on it to say for sure. If they don't have the air bag then the part on the dashboard is there to make it look like it has as it was an optional extra.

I am asking on behalf of someone else and I have asked them already to let me see the car to make sure there is an airbag as many have raised this point.
I assumed she knew that there was one but I now understand that she thinks it has because of a notice on the windscreen which could be a standard note whether or not one is fitted??
Yes I agree that the one fuse will do the complete system but is the system holding a charge which could be released even with the fuse removed.
That is why I asked if it completely disabled the system - not whether it disabled the complete system.
I confess that I do not know how an airbag system works.
Thanks to you and all others for your comments and please keep them coming if you have anything more to add.

Having now seen the car - the notice is on the passenger window only. In front of the Passenger seat there is a curved flat panel but it does NOT have SRS or anything else on it (my 75 says AirBag).
Taking the glove box off revealed a closed metal frame behind, but I could not determine one way or the other if there was a bag fitted.
Surely, if there was an air bag behind the panel there would have been some indication of this?
Incidentally, I would advise everyone to look more into Air Bags and their operation as they can be very dangerous in some circumstances.
For example, when you are driving what would happen to your fingers if the Driver Airbag deployed? You must consider very carefully how you hold the steering wheel as finger amputation is not unknown! (bag deploys at over 200 miles per hour)
www.airbagonoff.com is a site worth visiting - I thought so anyway!
