advice on recent MOT failure

Evening all,

This prob is not the right place at all, but my car failed it MOT today for a illegal tyre. ( stupid me missed the un-even wear)

I had to get a buget tyre to get it through - could not leave the car there til tomorrow to get some decent ones sorted...

However i dont like having mixed tread patterns on an axle... so i will be after a complete set for the back...

what should i try to do with the "spare" buget tyre?

flog it on here, or would i be able to get some money when i get my replacements (not much i know but)?

Or would you just get another carpy buget one?

i dont have a spare wheel - nor really space to keep it.

Any thoughts?

on a plus side all my tinkering has not resulted in my car being dangerous :D

My two initial thoughts:

Why is one tire bald? Did you have your alignment checked?

Secondly, I would fit the new tires to the front.
it was not completely bald.. just uneven and enough is past the legal limit...

the other side has about 2.5mm on it so squeaked through...

I always put my new tyres on the front - and imo opinion even more important not to use different tread patterns...

what do you keep in your spare wheel well instead then?

me personally would sort it as a spare even on a steel rim.

Then buy a pair of tyres of your choice toyo T1-S are my choice of the moment.

Last thought when you say budget what brand are we talking?

As some of them are not to bad and it would maybe be worth buying another matching one and shoving them on the front and see how long they last!

if its anything like the Kuhmo's i had on mine they went on for ever and ever and but overall where not the worst tyres i've fortuity to have driven on!

The worst been a set of 6Jx10" Mabor General's on my first mini let just say they made better water ski's than tyres in the wet lol!

Cheers Mark.
In my wheel well i have some emergency water, traingle.. footpump.. kitchen roll.. sunglasses.. and lump of polystyrene.

Lacking a wheel shaped object ;)

I have no idea what they are - i did not look that closely... but they are ÂŁ50, so i am not expecting a miracle.

If i had got a pair done i would do exactly as you say. With hindsight might have been the cheapest\most sensible option for me....

I usually go with BFGoodriches - the wet\dry grip is good and wear i find pretty good too, with not too much road noise or tramlining. also were only ÂŁ86 a corner last time i got them changed..

That said enough reviews seem to suggest giving the toyo's a go - just a case of which i can get my hands on i recon :)

I have had cheap tyres on my previous cars, and i am really dubious of sticking cheap ones on mine, i managed to scrub a number of sets before - while also having worrying handling characteristics at times...

maybe having little 15" wheels with stupid high sidewalls did not help ;)

I did think about getting a steely, might still do that - keep the tyre when i get them swapped and source one later

decisions decisions :)

Cheers,

Pete

I had Toyo and really liked them and will buy them on my next set. At the moment, I have a set of Goodyear F1s, which give massive amounts of grip. However, I am starting to think that they are too soft. I seem to be the only one complaining about too much torque, particularly in the low rev range. Perhaps a bit harder tires would help elivate some of my problem.

A full set of T1-R's which are the successor to the now discontinued T1-S from camskill online free shipping only ÂŁ244.00 then all you need is a friendly local tyre fitter top pop them on for a bit of beer money like the guys i know and job done and these are even cheaper than what i managed to get my last set for which came through my friend Martin who has a manufacturers account with toyo and cost ÂŁ256.00!

Either way a lot cheaper than BF Goodrich at ÂŁ86 a corner fitted!

Cheers Mark

hmm - well looking at camskill i can get t1r's at @ ÂŁ76.80 a tyre then get them fitted elsewhere.

been ringing around locally and i what cost me ÂŁ86 a corner about 18months ago has gone up to over ÂŁ105...:wtf:

One place even told me that the tyres fitted to my car are not possible because his computer system said so. Ironically it was the same company that fitted them before (different branch tho).

I need to get to know some mechanics etc i think!

hmm- slightly dubious about putting you foot down suddenly to enduce loss of grip.. but it is a fair example...

one understeers one oversteers - and i know which is easier to control if you get it wrong...

As a plus it means i dont have to get them to play swap the alloys round - as my rears dont have too much brake dust on them and i am much lazier than i should be at getting it off ;)
