45 1.4i struggling to rev/idle... intermittently!

Hello all. First time I've had cause to post on here with a problem. We have a Y Reg 45 1.4i, now with 115k on the clock, done about 25k of those with no real problems apart from having to change ABS rings.

In the last few weeks, every now and then, it's struggling to idle/rev. This first happened when stopping at shop on the way to work. Fine all the way there, go in shop for 5 mins, start car to go the last 1/2 mile to work, and it would really struggle. This has happened a few times.

Then today, coming home from work, it did it from cold. After a mile or so of struggling, it cleared and drove the rest of the way home fine.

I changed the plugs and oil last week to see if that would help. When changing the plugs I noticed some brown from possibly oil blowback around the base of the spark with some oil in the spark plug well. So I thought it may be leaky valve stem seals. However I have checked the plugs again today and there is no sign at the moment of any extra oil about.

Coils are under suspicion. Do they die gradually or just go? Is there a way to test them as they are expensive buggers to replace and still be left with a problem.

Any other ideas? Cheers.:(

Not sure if this will help but if you turn on the ignition don't start the engine pump the accelerator peddle 5 times...turn off the ignition turn back on and start the engine after a few seconds the engine will then settle down .....it may work if not i may be a sensor playing up and I'm sure someone else may be able to point you in the right direction ....

After taking it down the local garage and getting them to fault read...... 6 error codes, 4 for lambda sensor, one for Cam Pos sensor. Found some chafing of the CPS wiring on the block, but after taping up didn't make any difference.

So replaced the Lambda with a genuine Rover one (ÂŁ40 off eBay) and it seems to be cured! :rocker:

Mine had the same issue and it was the front lambda sensor. It dad me worried, thinking it would be expensive to fix but i got a Delphi lambda sensor for 40 odd quid and that sorted it. Happy days. I have done about 6000 miles since without a problem.. The front lambda sensor takes a beating because it is so close to the inlet manifold as does the front cat.
