A friend of mine who does not work for MGR was stoppped by security in LB for being in the wrong area. He was told that MGR are testing/working on a new 4.2 V8 for the 75 and he could not proceed.

Anyone heard this?

Nope, but glad to see security were around, if he doesn't work for MGR, dare I ask what he was doing at LB ;)

But as for a new 4.2 V8 - isn't the current V8 4.2? I can't see them changing it, it hasn't even made production in the 75 yet.

Great security MGR - talk about divulging secret info!

Possibly could mean nothing though – could just be the security guard mis-hearing someone ala Chinese whispers.

It's not as though this thing doesn't happen. I knew someone who was told by very proud Rover engineers in the mid 90s that they where working on a 180BHP engine. Not sure if this was the V6 or the Caterham 1.8 supersport engine but it was supposed to be secret.
Hardly great though is it?

Downing street in the early 40's:

"Will you please leave sir, we are discussing our top secret plans to invade france on the 6th June"

YEAH...great security MGR...telling your plans..well I know for certain that the V-8 in the Rover 75 V-8 is a 4.6L V-8....my grandmother owns a Lincoln Town Car with a 4.6L V-8 and THAT is the engine that is in the R75 V-8...hmmm...that is very interesting Rover's own V-8....WOW I will keep my eyes peeled for more info about that....

The Mustang V8 is definitely 4.6l.

Also the story is a bit odd because I don't think you could make a 4.2l KV8 (2x the largest K4 of 1.8l is only 3.6l), and I don't think MGR would invest in a totally new engine. I suppose MGR could make a KV12, but the likely displacements would be 4.0l (2x 2.0l KV6) or 5.0l (2x 2.5l KV6). Now that I mention it, that isn't a bad idea!

MGR need to refresh their whole engine range IMO and I doubt they would bother with developing a new v8 to begin with. Highly unlikely to say the least. We need a new K and L series first. They were given ÂŁ200m in the early 80's to develop a new engine because they argued that you cannot be a large scale car company if you don't have any engines of your own. I hope that this is one of the priorities for the future.

On the same topic is there any reason why MGR can't lobby the government for similar help in either developing the K and L or a completely new engine? Will the EU stop this or will Labour say no way? BMW got a guarantee of an investment of around ÂŁ100million (might have been ÂŁ50 million) or so IIRC but then pulled the plug. Why can't a similar amount be granted to MGR given that their need is greater and they are BRITISH?

Anthony.
