Hello Everybody, Especially Jonny Coupe and Ice,

I have a Rover 216GSI 1993, my cambelt has snapped and there may be damage to the valves so ive decided to go Vtec.

Do i put a vtec head on my lump or go for a full vtec engine? I think my engine is the D16A6 also known as D16Z2.

The spec is as follows:

Found in:
  • 1988-1991 Honda Civic Si, CRX Si, Civic Wagon RT4WD
  • 1990-1991 Honda Civic EX Sedan
  • 1988-1995 Honda Civic Shuttle RT4WD (UK/Europe/Asia/AU/NZ)
  • 1989-1996 Rover 216/416 GSi (UK/Europe)
  • Displacement : 1590 cmÂł
  • Bore and Stroke : 75 mm X 90 mm
  • Compression : 9.1:1
  • Power : 115 hp (86 kW) @ 5600 rpm & 95 ft·lbf @ 3,800 rpm, redline 6500 rpm (USA)
  • Note: 1988 engines were 105 hp (78 kW), MY89-91 hp was increased to 108
  • Valvetrain : SOHC
  • Fuel Control : OBD-0 four-point PGM-FI
  • Head Code : PM3
  • Piston Code : PM6
I really want to do this, have the facilities to do so and i would like to know what the best option is for my sohc engine or which would be the best and easiest engine to replace mine with.

I look forward to hearing from the pros, not the people who argue over a serial code for an engine that nobody uses.

Thanks dudes!

Rover 216GSI Vtec conversion

Hi, Thanks for that.

I really want to go vtec so which is the exact engine i should get?

When you say D16, what makes this a D16 over say a B16? Is the D16 The twin cam non vtec? i also have a 216GTI which has the twin cam honda engine which i am breaking, what can be done with this lump?

Thanks.

Sam.

why vtec? D16 SOHC vtec is 125bhp with no torque - the D16 DOHC produces 130bhp with loads more torque/tuning options.

if you really must go vtakk then B16 is the only real option for power (160bhp+)

swap the DOHC engine from the 216Gti and put it in the one with the ****** engine.

My cab has the D16 DOHC engine although I think the extra weight of the cab and the drag from the roof takes away alot of that power and fuel consumption isn't helped on the motorway with the close ratio gear box !!.

What options are available for this engine and what other cars has it been fitted in ?.

Rover 216GSI Vtec conversion

Hi, Thanks for your help.

My Rover 216 GSI D16 sohc is non vtec and i have dragged two Rover 216GTI D16 dohc and beaten them both consistently over 1/4 mile strip. The dohc is not as good, it has power steering and more power but looses by three car lengths every time, we swapped drivers and still the GSI wins every time! The sohc is really good for what it is and the speedo has read 145mph on four occasions!

I want vtec, i need vtec, i love vtec. There are lots of B16 Engine variations so do you know which exact model is required? The one from a CRX? Civic? 1.8 red top from the Integra? Please advise. I can give you my mobile number if it would be better to talk about it.

Thanks again.

A D16 Z6 cylinder head conversion, should up the compression ratio slightly, and with the right bolt on tuning parts and having it chipped, you could easily see 135bhp from this set up, possibly close to 140bhp with every other mod fitted, including a 4-1manifold, de-cat, cat back system, bigger bore TB, etc.

The std D16 A8/A9 or ZC engine as it's sometimes called, is 130bhp. The cylinder head flows better, and it has more potential for nasp power gains than all the SOHC VTEC engines. There are not so many cheap aftermarket parts available for it, and although you can get cams and inlet manifolds and all the other performance parts for them, they are not as common or cheap as SOHC parts. You sould easily get a D16 DOHC to produce 145bhp, and with cam's and a gaslflowed head etc, it should be close to 155bhp maybe?

The problem is that it costs a bit of money to tune the engine, further than an airfilter and exhaust system upgrade, so many people don't see too much point aiming for 150bhp+, when you can just find a B16 engine for a bit more cash, that can achieve over 170bhp with basic bolt on tuning parts. The trouble is that the B16 conversion costs much more to do, so personally for around uo to 150ish bhp, id stick with a DOHC D16.

Rover 216GSI Vtec Conversion

Hey thanks Stevo135+,

The DOHC has left me cold, i dont think they are as good as the SOHC as i have dragged a couple at the local strip and they have lost every time even when we swap drivers, i think my SOHC has been run in really well and runs like a dream for a 1.6. Ive had 7.8 0-60 and 143mph on the gps several times, however the vtec is what i want.

What makes the Vtec Conversion expensive? I want to buy a written off car with Vtec lump and straight swap the engine and loom into my car, how feasable is this?

Thanks again.

forget the vtec, rebuild (lower compression) and turbo the SOHC, done it before and have one now end of storey 250 bhp no problems. Its easy to do and will beat any NASP vtec all day long. It doesnt matter which vtec you get even if you put a k20 from a civic type r in it will still have no torque. Believe me this option increases the torque unbelievably, you can actually overtake at 70 mph in 5th gear on a country lane without dropping a gear and fly past. It also hits the limiter in 5th in no time, there just arent enough gears. Only problem you will encouter is getting a reliable clutch.

I have both a 416 Gti with the d16 dohc engine and a civic esi vtec with the d16 sohc vtec engine in it and I would say the d16 dohc is the engine to go for. Vtec comes in at 5000 rpm on the esi and there is an appreciable lack of torque as compared to the 416 gti.

right lets get somthign straight . a sohc vtec has more torque than the dohc non vtec

at 5200rpm the vtec is getting 106 ib

the dohc non vtec only gets to its 108 at 6200rpm

so the sohc will out excelrate the dohc easy ! trust me ive done it !!

if ur confident with doing a harness upgrade on ur existing ecu loom from obdo to 0bd1 then go for the vtec option if not stick with the dohc conversion both will drop in on the same mounts and shafts!

if u wanna go full out fit a b16 like i did . or a b18 as again same mounts etc as the b16 engine
u will need a cable box though . but to fit a b series u will need to custom make ur mounts etc

or go for a full out b20 conversion

get reading and searching plenty of info out there if u look .

heres a pic of my b16 rover coupe

Nice thread this.

I am thinking of building a 1600 rally car and want to use that b16 160bhp engine.

Is the drive shafts the same onthe turbodiesels as the ZR 160? And what driveshafts does the 216 GTI engines use?

Can you use the b16 gearbox with the rover shafts?

Thanks

The B20 aint exactly a good engine even when charged.

K20A is the way forward but its still a very expensive Engine.

If possible I would tend to go towards the B18 engines. (but not the 1.8 one from the Civic as it is a bit of a mis matched dog) The B16A2 from the newer Civic VTis and CRX's is also a very good engine. I had one with 140,000Miles that was well used and it still pulled over 160Bhp on the dynos everytime

In short its not about throwing money at it. It wont feel like a standard car when done and to be honest if you aint technically savvy about the engine you will end up with hassles you cannot fix yourself.

End result of this:

222 bhp@8220 rpm
157 lb-ft @5938 rpm

I always laugh when people tell me the K20A has no Torque.. The car pulls in 6th from town all the way to the top
