160 drinking coolant

So the girlfriend's ZR has developed a drinking problem. Apparently she's getting through an alarming amount of coolant (having to top it up almost daily now by the sounds of things - thank god MG decided to fit those low coolant alarms on the facelifts!)

I've had a look and the dipstick looks clean, as does the oil cap. The coolant looks clean too, so not sure where it's all going?

The only thing (other than the obvious hgf) I can think of is that she's topping up with just water, would she fair any better using proper OAT coolant?

Any advice greatly appreciated chaps. Not looking good though :( Which mobile mechanic is closest to Swindon?

cheers
Ben

One thing I will say is try to avoid using water to fill up the header tank.

A mix of coolant and water is specified for a reason. It has a higher boiling point so you wont get any air locks due to the water boiling in the engine creating little pockets of steam. Also coolant protects inside the engine against corrosion.

With the coolant leak, I would look on the back of the engine and the sump for any white/pink stains where coolant has been leaking. You could have a leaking water pump, leaking thermostat or leaking coolant rail.

Hard to tell without getting the car up on som stands and having a good look around underneath.

Hi, it's probably a leak from the waterpump... it's the most common weak point on the cooling system, it would be the first thing to check... some waterpumps on the later models have an evaporation chamber fitted so you won't see a visible leak from it but there should be signs of dry coolant stains around that area if it is that... x
