As title really, the growlers knocking from the front, mainly the offside over bumps at low speed.

IIRC i read a thread saying they all do it , but I wondered if I could have feedback from other owners, as if it is an issue Ill get it in beforew the warranty expires

Depends what sort of knocking, mine doesn't knock at all over bumps but i did have a knocking noise a while back that occured at the front passenger side when going over bumps, turning, braking and accelerating. Turned out to be a loose bolt on the front sub frame, took em 10 minues to fix (although two visits to identify it).
If it's knocking i'd take it in cos mine certainly doesn't do it, not at low speed anyway.
It's the tyres rubbing the arch that they quite often do, never heard of a knocking noise being that common. Sounds like it needs checking out.
There is a thread over on Xpower about this type of thing. Seems it's a pretty common thing for these guys.

I've only just changed to my ZS... but I thought I heard something the other night on a very slow right turn over 'rumbling' road surface. Seemed to be from the front right. Or it might have just been my glasses case bumping about.
Mine has always had a knock when turning left dealer has put it down to wheel catching the arch
I dont quite understand how thay can dismiss the wheel catching the arch quite so easily....surely its an MOT failure if it happens?

My mate had a knock in his ZS...it turned out it was something to do with the rear doors MG sorted it on the third visit...(obviously not much use if you dont have a 5 door)
Knocking coming from front of car ?

My Y-plate ZS180 is producing the same occasional noise..mostly when i brake and turn. Ive got it booked in to the garage for Monday morning to get it checked out. The mechanic mentioned that he had an MG in before with similar symptoms and he found that the anti-roll bar bushes where worn. Has anyone came across this before ?

Ive done 47k miles and was wondering when the plugs, fuel filters etc require changing.
I have been informed that the cam belts dont need doen till 90k ? That cant be right ? is it? its a big engine and is built to get thrashed a bit, so how come the belt can last so long ?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

baz out !
Mine makes a knocking sound when going over bumps sometimes, but it goes away when you brake and/or turn the steering - bizarre! Get the dealer to check it out if it is under warranty (although looking at today's sad news the dealer may not do the work as the warranty probably isn't worth the paper it is written on!)
thanks for the helpful replies.
I guess Ill check the dealers on monday and try and get it booked in !
Ill let you know how I get on

Hi mate.
I have a Y reg ZS180 and the front end clonks all the time, especially over bumps. Also when I start it up, I think the exhaust rattles on the underside (can feel it thru the footwell). Stupid question really but should I get it checked out-assuming my local dealer is still in business?

i will add here after i get the results from my wee visit to the garage today.
If its something thats concerning you then I would get it checked even if you use a local "trusted" garage to have a look underneath.
But as far as im aware, the clunking is a common problem on this model but it doesnt make it any less worrying.
My car only clunks when i hit a bump turning a corner. It sounds like a spring being released against the underside of the chassis.

good luck buddy
rang Phoenix preston.
"did you buy the car from us sir?"

"no" was the reply.

"oh, then due to the current situation we will only do warranty work for those vehicles bought from us".

Fair do's really. Ill have to keep an eye on things
well, I got my car back from the garage yesterday.
They couldnt find anything wrong with the bushes, coils or shock absorbers.
So im nun-the-wiser with that annoyng noise.
However he did find the airbox i forgot to remove from the inner wing when i uprgraded to the PiperX kit :shh: but thats not where the noise is coming from.
Next I will contact MG in Montrose and see what they can suggest.

.......the story continues.

suspension knocking over bumps

I posted this thread on the X Power forum this morning also.

Ok, last night I was removing the "forgotten" airbox from the inner wing.
As i was finishing up and putting the wheel back on, I leant on the wheel to stand up (with the car still jacked up of course, so the wheel was floating) when I put my weight on the wheel it dropped about 10mm and I heard that feckin "Boing" noise but it was much quieter than when I hear it in the car, probably because the coils have extended some what and arent under any pressure. I proceeded to investigate by pushing the wheel down and seeing what was loose....to my horror, i found that the shock absorber/coil mounting was loose. The two flange nuts that secure the assembly top side (under the bonnet where the strut comes through the turret top of the wheel arch) I found that both front struts where loose...all 4 flange nuts where around 5-7mm away from being tightened down. Unless im mistaken and this is factory set this way, but i seriously doubt it.
If you look at the attached pic you will see the shiny threads on the studs above the flange nuts, that is how much I have tightened down the nuts.

Could someone let me know if they should be loose and i have just ******ed mine up or if anyone else has had a look and found that theirs where loose also.
I hope we have found the answer but it sounds far to obvious for me.

Thanks mate for investigating so far. Mine occassionally makes the boing noise too. Better check how tight my nuts are.......
Fook- post it to self- must tighten my nuts !

Now wheres that picture of kate lawler and michelle heaton doing the celeb wrestling !!
:banghead: Oh well, there goes my theory with the loose strut bolts causing the boing from my suspension.
Was out testing it last night and lo-and-behold....it reared its ugly head again.
Am gonna get under the car at the weekend to see if I can see anything else (loose)
im now well and truelly peed off with it now, but ive had the car for 2.5 years now and nothing else has bothered me with it so i suppose i cant really complain too much.

If anyone can find out the real reason for this "boing" then could they please put me out my misery....so far I know its NOT the loose strut nuts, NOT the wheel hitting the wheel arch, NOT a damaged spring, NOT worn bushes (any of them) im fast running out of possibilities.

Mate, are you not going to the Lonbridge/Gaydon meeting this w/end? Doesn't leave much time for investigation. I'm going to get mine sorted by my local dealer soon.
My ZS180 makes a rumbling noise through the front suspension when i drive over cobble stones or uneven surfaces, sound worse when in reverse and you actually feel it through the steering wheel. I have noticed a few times lately that i get the "Boing" noise if i go round some corners. My local dealer in Montrose checked all my front suspension for the Knocks and found nothing abnormal. They said nothing is about to fall off so I was fairly happy.
I was gonna book mine into Guthries in Montrose, but most folks on here say that their dealers havent found anything wrong with the suspension, so i havent bothered.

Does anyone know if the LEDA or AVO replacement kits make the knocking noise also ? If not, then it may be easier to find the answer as to why it happens on the standard kit. (any dimensional or rigidity differences between standard and upgrade kits)

On my Y reg 180 , I can go days without any noise and then all of a sudden I fill my breeks when im doing "undisclosed speeds" on a country road and the suspensions boings....very scary !!!! but then you remember what it is and then put your foot down and enjoy the car again :cloud9:
