ZR Wind Noise

2336 Views 24 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Diffbuster
Hello,

I posted this in another section of the forum but didn't get any replies. I recently bought a MG ZR 105 and have noticed a problem with wind noise when it gets up to about 70mph. It's def the window and not the mirrors as the noise gets less if I open the window slightly. It only seems to be the drivers window as well.

Someone mentioned window sealant in another section, is this easy to do yourself....i'm a man who doesn't have much experience with cars but the love of my ZR is making me take an interest.

Cheers

I think the issue is sound deadening all round, they don't have any lol

Check the windows sit correctly, mine have little gaps at the front
Only on the drivers side?
it's possible for the seals to be seated different on each side, with the window closed, press gently on the top seal and see if it moves, obviously if the glass has gone up into it properly, it will support the seal and stop any movement.
it will be your sun roof seal, read the how to on fixing it

When the window is closed, if I press the top of the window their is a slight bit of movement. Do you think it's this movement causing the noise? How to stop it?

Don't have a sun roof so it can't be this. Cheers though.
if the window is not quite meeting one point on the seal, it will whistle as you work... sorry, that should be drive
my windows need to be done up, handle released and then just nudged up again, if someone just does the window up 'till it stops then it usually isn't quite done up... and i usually find out as i wash the car :(
when you wash the car, do you get condensation on the inside of the window where the seal is?
You are lucky. The sunroof is the only thing I don't like on my car. Mine is sealed shut. Was thinking of putting solar panels behind it to keep the battery topped up and take some of the load off the alternator during daytime driving, maybe free up a quarter of a horse. lol. I have noise coming from my passenger wing mirror but I can only hear it if I Have the window down. My drivers side window was making noise but I pulled the window rubber out of it's seating and put it back lightly and let the window push it home. That solved the problem for me.

To be honest I've only had the car a week and haven't washed it yet.

Was planning on washing it this morning but good old north east weather.....it's raining. When I do I'll keep and eye out for condensation.

Nice one, that sounds like a good idea. I'll see how it goes after I wash it.

Would be a bit nervous pulling the window rubber out though.

:eek:mg2: you've had it an entire week and haven't washed it???
rain just helps wash off the soap... and means you don't have to dry it off

Hi Buddy, my zr had this issue, its the door window mech, it moves slightly as the bolts holding it are not gripping properly, i removed the door card and added a small spring washer and realigned back up, then tighten, it sorted it, but i had a tiny nick in the window rubber i had to replace, now i have no wind noise...

Pull the plastic covers off the wing mirrors, and the door cards.

Go to your nearest carpet shop and buy some underlay, then use some duct tape to cover the insides of your doors and insides of where the covers go for the wing mirrors. Make sure you cut holes out for the screws and clips.

Sorts it right out.

If you have the energy and time take the trims out of the boot too and do that, while your there cover the vents up as they bring water into the boot.

Dont worry about the carpet as its quite thick.
Nice ideas, cheers for the tips. I'll see what I can sort out this week.

I know shocking isn't it? However I have righted this wrong today after work. Looking beautiful again now!!!

Don't take the rubber right out or you will probably end up having to strip the door to get it back in properly, Just pull it down slightly along the top edge and let the window re-seat it.

I purposely went out and washed my car in the rain coz I couldn't be arsed shammying it. Coz every time I do dry it off propper the sea gulls seem to appear. Especially when I spend half a day on it. Sods law i guess.
