You gotta roll with it (or maybe not)

I did my first track day yesterday since fitting the new 304mm rear brakes and custom 23mm anti roll bars and the difference is amazing. Going into corners I was able to brake virtually at the turning point rather than the normal braking point and the car griped the road like glue all the way round, Cars that were sniffing at my heals going into the corner were left for dead by the end of it and took them half the straight to catch me again. below are couple of pics, first one taken at Donington Park with the old set up and the second yesterday at Castle Combe with the new set up, judge for yourselves. (despite the appearance it is the same car)

Looks great Andy - what size are the rear bars?

Brake wise, as I recall, you are using 304 vented discs front and rear, with AP 4-pots up front and HiSpec 2-pot rears? I can't remember the piston diameter of the rear calipers? I think I am right in saying that you've got an adjustable brake bias valve too?

Great that the new set up works so well! Would be great to measure the 60-0 braking distance :D

And the cornering is pretty flat (in fact, that looks really undramatic - but I am sure the G-force is there!)

Brilliant - any more pictures mate?

Nice video - looks as though you were caught in traffic a couple of times stuck behind MGBs! The G-meter I presume is calibrated at 1G per mark? In which case the cornering was indeed nice and flat! :D

BTW what app were you using to recording this? Harry's Lap timer permits you to connect up to the EOBD connector to get engine rpm data from the ECU :)

Rob the front and rear bars are the same.. Made 80% stiffer than stock F ..

Double shear drop link mount s front and rear.. Rose joint drop links front.. Bespoke Kedunga mounts rear..

Andy.. Looks good now.. Suspension should be doing the work to keep the tyres on the ground.. And it can now the body roll has gone..

How ya finding the Torsen diff out of the corners..?

No probs with brake fade or heat then?

The diff is a quaife and definitely felt that I had more traction in the corners and able to accelerate out a lot quicker.

No brake fade at all and heat not an issue. Also contrary to whats been said in previous threads the back of the car didn't spin out when braking, not sure what would have happened if I hadn't had a bias valve.

Using the VHS thicker anti roll bars for road use has certainly helped the handling of my car too. I sped around a local roundabout leaving a Golf GTi way behind last weekend.

He could have been a crappy driver of course, but the TF really took the corners well. I was impressed with the difference from standard... :)

Great photos and video Andy!

It was my first track day yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I suspect my Steppie was frowned upon by some (at least one B owner expressed surprise I even bothered) but I kept up with many and was only overtaken by the highly modified cars in my group. One thing about a Steppie...you're always in the right gear at the corners!

Good to meet you yesterday. Who was that with you, I didn't catch his name?

Enjoyed the day so much I booked a repeat in September this morning!

Rob the stock F and TF had same thickness bars front and rear from factory..?

The 85th had thicker front bars than rear for some reason..

Think (someone correct me) the Trophy had standard ARBs front and rear

I did ask Darren what thickness his are on his super sport but never got a reply

Panthers were standard... Cheetahs ? Anyone?

I did look at having adjustment on the bars.. But opted for an exact copy of factory just 80% thicker..

No, there has always been a difference in the diameter of the front and rear bars on the MGF and TF. :)

ARB diameters (in mm) for front (F) and rear (R)

MGF (including Trophy) - F: 19, R: 17
TF (2002-2005) - F: 20, R: 18
TF (MY2005) - F: 21, R: 19
TF 85LE - F: 25, R: 20
TF VHS handling kit - F: 25, R: 20

Going 23mm front and rear is pretty radical compared to the norm - and am interested to hear Andy's driving impressions?

Note that diameter is not the sole variable at play here - the TF rear ARB is very different with a longer lever distance to the pivot centre of the ARB compared to the MGF - and therefore "softer" than its diameter may imply if the ARB were made of the same material. I do not know the specification of the steels used in the above ARB designs.

I've got a set of TF ARBs sitting in the garage (for, errr, 10 years) to play with on the F - but ultimately, the F will be converted to TF suspension using VHS ARBs. :)

Andy Watson/ Diesel D - F: 22.8, R: 22.8 ?
I sent Coil Springs UK the stock ARBs from an F and asked for 20% thicker than stock

I never measured the new bars.. just assumed (wrongly) that both were 22.8mm.. guessing they made both bars at 22.8mm

Trouble is we have both wrapped the bars with silicone tape..

I'll measure my rear tonight with a Vernier

They certainly both look identical

My bad
