It has happened to me too, in an Italian motorway, the wiper linkage was broken. I fixed it temporarily with a rubber band, when I was home I ordered a repair kit and fixed it definitively.
Wiper failure!
70mph (honest officer) on the Motorway this afternoon. Absolute downpour and the drivers wiper linkage came off!
Arrrggghhh! Another thing to do. Drill followed by nut and bolt methinks!

Linkage failure isnt so bad, I had motor fail on me - also motorway speed in torrential downpour at 5am
