Once the current new stock of MG Rovers go – who will you buy your next new car from (assuming – god forbid – nothing can be done to save the MG Rover brand) if you are still inclined to buy something a bit British?

If you want to buy British made (but not British owned) you still have some choice I suppose…

Some Nissan's
Some Honda’s
Some Toyota's
Jaguar's
Aston Martin's (if your rich)
Some Peugeot's
Land Rover's
Mini's

…and I’m sure there are some others I’ve missed.

Do they actually still make any Vauxhalls here now? I thought they all went years ago.

And in answer to the question in the thread - I shan't buy new, since I now can't buy a new British family car. I'll just have to get a 3-4 year old Jaguar, I suppose.

Or perhaps go to classic cars. A Stag should be well within budget, and I do rather fancy one of those.

On the miles I do any car I buy will only last 4 or 5 years so It wont really be MG or Rover for ever for me unfortunatly.

I will only buy from a company that has some manufacturing here possibly a Vauxhall bought some Vauxhall in the eighties I like the new Astra 3 door Hatch.

I like the new Mini but would never have considered one while MGR were going, but Im still reluctant to swell BMW coffers.

I was going to buy a new ZR later this year which now leaves me with a dilema try and get a pre reg one now, buy a second hand one later in the year or look at something else.

I was planning a new 75 Tourer for before the summer holidays. Looked at used ones but was getting a very attractive quote on a new 1.8T. I was seriously considering a Contemporary SE with the V8 grill and most likely the V6 engine but (under the bespoke build) retaining the chrome trim round the windows etc.
Still going to enquire as to what's possible but I've a feeling it'll end up my second choice of a Jaguar X-Type Estate, it's made over here and still retains enough of the old XJ appearance to look classical. May be owned by Ford but at least they're still going and I've always had a soft spot for Jags. Always wished having AWD could have been an option on the 75. Still keeping the Rovers as the trade-in is likely to be upsetting. Rather keep them than give them away....

Don't forget TVR....

My current plan of action is to keep my R75 for another 2 years until May 2007, by that time I am hoping that it will be possible to buy a similar sized car from the 'new' MG company or just maybe a British made Rover although I have my doubts.

Unfortunately I suspect that the 'new' MG car company will be offering small roadster type cars only and Rovers will be poor imitations imported from China.

Therefore I will have to look into the possibility of Jaguar (if they're still around) however I suspect I will opt for a Volvo S60, yes I know it's foreign owned and built but something about Volvo reminds me of the proper Rover car company from it's heyday in the 50s and 60s.

Having said all that, I am hopeful that I will be able to pick up one of the last Longbridge R75s with Premium (V8) front end in Connoisseur SE or Contemporary SE trim during the next 12 months for a great price.

My Rover 45 is a company car and I should keep it for a few years yet, but following the events my leasing company may call it back.

In which case I think the only car I would choose would be a primera, it's the only British built car that's sufficiently different to the rest opf the crowd.

Of course I would shed a tear if they forced me to hand the Rover back.

I would dearly love to upgrade my Rover 45 to a 'facelift' MG ZS 1.6, tho I've a feeling that they may go up in value now, whilst the value of my 45 has probably gone through the floor (I'm hearing that some dealers are refusing to part-ex Rovers at the mo.)

Fortunately, I had no plans to sell right now anyway, I've only had the 45 for 6 months and I'm very happy with it. I'm hoping that in 6 months time the panic will be over 2nd hand Rover prices will have recovered...

I'll be buying another Land Rover. (probably the New 07 Freelander or and LR3/Discovery) Most of the people that designed and engineered the 75, TF, etc are still working at Gaydon. The Rover design ethos is alive and well, it just happens to have LAND in front of it now!
Me too. I was aiming to get a ZT to join my P38 but thats life... :sad2:

Like panavision, I have also thought about the Mazda 6. Performance won't match the ZS but it looks the part, supposed to handle nicely too.

Have also got my eye on a Laguna 2.0 Turbo, seems like a lot of kit for the money and my old Megane was trouble free and very quiet & quite nippy.

I don't want to sell my ZS but a combination of factors are making a new car more attractive. I have some excess cash, I have no warranty left on my ZS, it's due an MOT and service soon.

I'd love a big engine ZT as I think they'll be collectable and hold their value in a few years but insuring one of those monsters will be tricky, I imagine the Laguna I fancy will push up the premium by a few quid too.

Gutted for new Rover owners, I think MG will survive in one guise or another
