The reason I ask is that I currently own a 1994 L reg 214si, I've had it for 6 weeks now, having past my test at the beginning of February.

I want to know what you think of this car, as you might have moved onto others since then & have others to compare it to.

It's just that I really like this car, & although I'm aware most people LOVE their first car, I suspect this one is pretty nippy for it's engine size.

The 214 definitely nippy for an engine of its size. Compared with others of the same size its top of the class material.

I don't actually own one just yet as I myself have a driving test coming up soon, however I am not as lucky as some and get a car for themselves to practice in. :=p:

However, from what I have heard many people find their next car after the 214 quite slow and unrefined. I'd say stick with it for a while and get a ZR afterwards. ;) You won't be dissapointed.

ive had two, i'll spare you my bad experences though as it wouldnt be fair.
But the 2nd Mk2 214SLi I had I really liked, was a 95 M plate with plush seat, full electrics and that lovely K.
To have one as a first car is impressive, but thats in reference to insurance as I never found it cheap to insure.
Just be careful with the power mind, usualy good advise with any 1.4, but with the K toping over 100 bhp its a must :D
In regard to the car after the 214, well i'll admit its slower, being a 1.2 16v thats to be expected ;) but its a lovely little motor all the same.

I payed £600, just for 3rd party only! Having just passed my test not helping, nor living in Glasgow (relatively high car crime), but I'm 29 & keep it in a garage.

I've had a '93 414Sli and a '95 214Sei and the 200 is a lot better, classier and a lot quicker than the 400 - but i only paid £100 for the 400 so i cant argue. i've gotta admit, i did get me hooked onto rovers and now on the lookout for another one :D

once you join the club, you never leave :D

WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I have had two cars with the 1.4 K engine, a 241 like yours and a later 414 which I traded in last week.

The 200 was definately faster and probably better built as well. Good car and will run rings around any 1.4 (and most 1.6) cars of the same era. Only went because it was my dads car and he wanted a 620!

You have made a good choice.

I had a 93 K plate 214 si, and it was and still is a great car, after I got a car with a new job I gave it to my dad and he's still running about in it today.

listening to posts like these makes you wonder why rover arn't doing better if people genuinly do love these cars. I intend to carry on buying MGR at least till I have a bad experience ( non yet )

Mines got the same engine & yes definately fast for a 1.4 of its age, at our age ( just passed test or 17-21 ) you can't get a better engine unless you can afford some these bran new cars that admitedly do perform amazingly well for their size( lol experiences with 1.2 clio 04 reg ) (back to the rover ) But payin under a thousand pounds for a car with this much quality is the best you'll find ( IMO ) lol only other thing in the price range of a mk2 would be an escort & trust me I wouldn't go there. ( my mate owned one the older ones, very slow for a 1.4 , & its engine sounded like ........ yeh, friend at work just part ex'd one for a new corsa, she got 100 pounds I think )

Although yesterday I saw a zr on the side of a roundabout, looked lil unfortunate saw him messin with the coolant tank, so can probably guess whats happened with his.... which really emphasis's to me do regular maintenance other wise even the newer cars suffer.

I had a 214Si Cabriolet up until about four years ago.

A stunning looking little thing in BRG.

I had to put a new roof on it, cos the old one split and I also admit to having a touch of vanity in also putting a personal plate on it - because it looked nowhere near as old as the L plate it was registered on suggested. :D

A proper four seater open top sports car - with a decent boot as well.

Cheap to buy, cheap to run and I sold it for the same price as I paid for it three years later.

Decent performance, good on fuel, cheap to insure. Never let me down,

WTF did I sell it???? :twak2:

yea mate had one for nearly 3 years loved it. I upset a couple of corsa sports and the like in fact a mk 1 mr2 only just beat me once from a standing start good car for cheap insurance and correct me if im wrong probly the most powerful n/a 1.4 as far as i know out of the factory. unfortunatley i lent it my little brother and he finished the cambelt off (gutted) 3 years on and its still on my parents drive i cant let it go it will break my heart! though i did go through 3 alternators a gearbox and 2 clutches guess i was a bit harsh on the poor thing but it hasnt put me off im after a vi now perhaps in the summer.

bottom line is since then i have had a ford escort a vauxhall astra 1.8 sport a renault 19 16v and an audi a4 none of which excited me like the rover did as far as im concerned nuff said!!!

I had a 1998 Rover 200 1.4 (8 valve) Is that a Mk2?

It was a great car. It got me from the Mids to London and back every week without complaint. I was being paid expenses so its the only car I ever made money on :D

My only complaint with it was the Battery. One night I didn't shut the boot properly, the little light stayed on for 10 hours and drained the battery. Getting the RAC out into the middle of nowhere was difficult but we managed it.

If I didn't have the Zed I would still have my 200. I was damned proud to have that car.

Yeah I had a 214SLi (91 H reg) as my second car and it is one of the few cars that I have owned that I was reluctant to get rid of. Pretty much every other car that I have owned, I have got bored with and decided to change.

I did 60,000 miles in 2.5 years in it and it held up very well. I had the 1.4i 16v (90PS) Catalyst version and it went like stink.

I am on my 2nd 214 sli, they are a great car, very quick for a big body and small engine. Never had any major problems or cost for running the car. Shame they didn't make a MG version of them????

I love mine (unmolested '95 sei charcoal grey), even if it is dead on the road at the moment (some kind of electrical problem). Generally very reliable, and far better car than an equivalent ten year old car.
Friend's of mine like slagging it off for being a rover, but have also praised its motorway cruising comfort, speed bump absorption, handling, power, remote central locking, etc. Not much left to like is there? Oh yes its good from a drivers point of view too, except perhaps the brakes.
I think the few probs i've had with mine are due to one of the (six, i knew that was a bad idea at the time!) previous owners not servicing it properly.

It'll be hard to replace without spending a fair bit more cash

I had 2 - a '91 214 Si 3 door and a '94 214SEi 3 door. Both were 100% reliable, cheap to run and great fun. The SEi was good because it had lots of gadgets.

I had a '92 214Si from 1997 - 1998 - it was a lovely little car. Only problem was that mine had no power steering. Traded it for a 414 (96N)

I have owned two 214s. I found them both to be excellent cars and 100% reliable.

My first was a 1990 SLi bought new. It was passed it on to my dad and then my brother who eventually sold it when it was 13 years old with over 100 000 miles on the clock.

My second was a 1995 SEi 3 dr with leather and alloys. This was even better than the first one as it had multipoint injection and power steering.
