So, following on from a discussion in the puba while back - F or TF which will look "dated" first??

OK... following on from the pub theme and from the text messages Ive just received a couple of comments :-

a) how did you all get my phone number???!!! stop stalking me - use the forums ;)
b) No really - it happens - if you dont believe me google images - look for pix of a Triumph TR6.... then for a TR7

Disagree, the TF looks more purposeful, cleaner lines and looks fast at standstill.

However its much upto personal taste, this post could be called "what MG do you have?" and get exactly the same results as no one is going to class THEIR car as dated.

I recall the exact same comments about the TR7

Well maybe. I have both. Neither look dated yet (in my opinion) but I think the TF will do.

I also used to own both a TR6 and TR7. Im the first to say I miss both but if I could have either back despite the fact the TR6 made my F look fault free and the TR7 only had a couple of bulbs replaced in all the years I owned it I would grab the TR6 every time, for any number of reasons, but in this context because the TR7 looks soo dated now.

I think they both look dated actually.

Not having xenon lighting or rear LED lights... and dashboard and centre console looking too 'plasticky'...

I'm afraid I can't cast a vote.

Then again.. it's the car I have and I love it the way it is!

I have to agree mostly with this too, especially now with cars current trends of large perculiar shaped headlights that seem to sweep up some way up into the top of the bonnet and around the wings and an almost 'bumperless' appearance, not to mention that very '90s' interior found in both F and TF. Which makes me feel the TF has dated more, with F being from around that era anyway and has the more classic look to start with gives it a more timeless image.

Even styling wise when the F was introduced, most cars were really curvy of that era, then when the TF came along cars were just starting to change trend to the more angular styled TF look. I think its going full circle again and the trend is just starting to go rounder again, then 10 years time no doubt angular...etc. and so the cycle/trend repeats...

I see the TR7 was mentioned in contrast to the TR6, but according to what I have read of the styling of the F, the inspiration for the F's nose was this...

And case proven as the F front grille badge will fit an MGB rubber bumper perfectly...

But the market view on MGBs is that the more sought after and timeless is this...

And therefore because there is a TF in the photo, the TF must surely be the one that will look less dated! :handbag:

Exactly my thoughts :broon:

IMO the F already looks dated, whereas TF still looks fresh today some 8 years after launch. Not too many cars still look good 8 years after launch so they did a damn fine job with the TF....the inside is not too bad, but the outside is just fine :D:D:D
Yup agree, F is too old now and it doesn't have the cool, still modern looks of a TF and as you said even after 8 years. BUT it is getting outdated quite fast though. I compare it to other cars and it's still looking good, although the rear lights are a bit dated. I think the lexus ones brings the rear up quite nicely, so imo this mode is a must.

hard to say, the F looks soft but in the hands of a lady is fine :D

so i would say the TF will stay current longer

BUT

on saying that

im converting my ZR Mk1 to look like a Rover 200

becuase i think the rover 200 lights (all be it angle eyed and smoked) look more modern than evan a Mk2 ZR

so its in the eye of the beholder really

I thinkit s a real shame that we can't agree to differ without nasty things being said about either model. I love my F and I think it's a beautiful looking car, so it offends me to hear it being called dated. I wouldn't comment about the TF negatively because there are people on here who drive them and love them. What was it Thumper said?

I don't like to use the word "dated" for these cars, if the F is already considered a classic, the TF is goin' to become a classic too. Both the cars are still pretty modern and they have a stunning design, in my choice I preferred the TF , when I bought my car 3 years ago, convinced to be less prone to have troubles than the F and scared for the Hydragas problems. But I like the F as the TF.:broon:

Bearing in mind that the TF is really just a Mk3 F...

We went for the TF because of the aging issue. When I look at an F, yes it's nice but I am reminded of the Mazda MX3, maybe not a bad thing...

I suppose that only time will tell.

To be honest they're both great looking cars, in different ways, so you've got to love them in a different way too. The F looks classic, the TF looks more current - nothing wrong with that, both are fantastic cars for their respective looks. I'd have both for different reasons.

The TR6 and TR7 are completely different designs whereas the TF is an evolution of the F.

If you wanted to draw a TR comparison you would have to compare the TR5 to TR6

Much as I love Mungo, we were first drawn to the marque by a Morello F in Greenock, and it's only by various quirks of fate that we ended up with the TF instead. I love them both and I get just as excited spotting an F when I'm out and about - I've had more friendly waves from F drivers than TF drivers too!

"Dated" simply seems to be a cynical word for "classic" - the older MGs, A's, B's, even pre-war models, are clearly "dated", yet this only adds to their appeal, so I have no problem with the current F and TF passing into design history and joining their hallowed ranks.

The TF is the evolution of the F, both share quite a bit of DNA.

But then again, both of these share a lot of DNA

Would you rather be seen out with the older classic looking model or the woman? :dunno:

I suppose it is down to personal taste. :)

It's human nature. It's also just a laugh. Don't take it too seriously.

The only true fact from me is that I bought the TF because the F looked too old fashioned for my taste and I only say that because the OP asked. :dunno:
