Where would MG-R be now if...

...if BMW hadn't have stolen the design for the new Mini ( or Bini )???

Just think of the sales BMW have from this car - because of Rover! It does make you wonder where MG Rover would be now, it's position and situation both financially and reputation.

Maybe if Rover would have had it, it may not have sold as well as BMW but you can guarantee it would have done Rover proud

Still can not believe even to this day what BMW did to Rover :sad3:

tbh, the Mini doesn't make that much profit off each car, if you believe BMW. Alsot the sales wouldn't have been as good due to mgr having no route to market in the US and the MINI alone probably wouldn't have worked. Naturally you also get the tits who buy it simply because its 'made by BMW' :guns2:
red_flame, have you read the austin-rover.co.uk MINI story? I think it decribes the development process and BMW influence in a very interesting (and believable) way.
It's not just MINI. Imagine if it was all still the same group:

New Range Rover and Ranger Rover Sport
MINI
New LandRover

All great quality, aspirational products.

We'd have had the new 45 a 2-3 years ago.
Probably the new 25 by now
New 75 in a year's time or so.

Only down side is that the MG side wouldn't have got developed at all...

Simon.

If MGR had kept MINI it would have flopped. The media would have called it over-priced, too retro, poor quality and unfashionable. The BMW name gives it respect, for some reason the company who made the original all along doesnt. Thats Britain for you :shake:

Its for the best that MGR doesnt run Land Rover/MINI as they wouldnt have been able to afford to keep them running, let alone fund projects like the new Discovery. I'd love to see MGR own them but theres jobs on the line...
Why even discuss this, just to upset ourselves further!

Fact is Rover would never have developed the new Discovery, Range Rover. They never had the money to do it. It's cost ford £billions.

Get over it all I say.

Just to set the record straight, Ford did not pay billions to develop the Range Rover - BMW did.

Land Rover started the development work on the new Discovery on the day that ownership transferred from BMW to Ford. Similarly the Range Rover Sport was started after Ford ownership.
Actaully, according to insiders, and can be seen on keiths site, the new Discovery was being developed by the old Rover Group ltd :) .

Maybe they could fund it, if they had the money from the sales of Land Rovers all over the world. MGR was stripped off anything that had some interest for the important markets.
What if ...Honda had taken 47.5% of Rover Group Ltd and the rest had been floated on the stock market...?

Current Honda range:

Jazz/ Rover 25
Civic/ Rover 45
Accord/ Rover 75
Odyssey/ Rover 65
Legend/ Rover 95

CRV/ Freelander (they actually look a lot alike)
[Crossroad]/ Discovery
S2000/ MG TF

Also potential for a Mini/ Honda Life platform share

Perfect synergy from platform sharing.

Visit their Japan site to see the full range and the lost opportunity.

Actually I think you'll find it was charged against MG-R's bottom line. (at least up until the sale to Ford.)
Badge engineered Honda's was only ever a short term solution during the dark days of the 80's; and they were'nt particularly good days for either of them... However Honda will have wanted to have moved on by now.

If this was'nt the case and Honda wanted to go full balls out with Rover, then how come we only got the Honda Balade/Rover 400 4 years after it was first released in Japan? I seriously doubt that the newest batch of Honda's would have worn Rover badges at all...
