Hi all

I'm going to need a third car temporarily, and one of my neighbours is selling a 96 registered wedge 214SLi. It has FSH and only 45k miles and certainly looks great. My question is: where are the common places for tin worm in these cars? I had one years ago, but it was brand new, so I don't know.

Also, can a bubble dashboard be fitted?

Biggest issue is the switch's. You need to change all of them and some of the connectors. As to what to look out for,

Head gasket esp on a late one (BMW started mucking up the K by then so it's a deffo thing to check),

Rear bearings are a none issue and front bearings too,

Hand break is hard to set-up esp if it has rear disc's but a 214 should be drums, But do check,

Two keys and two working fobs are a must for myself as is a working key access code. Might seem petty but little things cost you dear.

Check it has the locking wheel nut with it been an SEi should have alloys on it.

Door switch's are prone to breaking due to the poor Honda switch used so check all of them work the interior light.

Apart from that they are solid cars and rust should not be an issue. I have seen some with rust but thats more the exception then the rule.
 
Usually first place to rot is the rear end of the sill and front of rear wheelarch.
Telltale bubbles on the paintwork in this area mean it's well on the way. It rots from the inside.
If it's clean then it's well worth waxoyling it before it starts. There's a bung in the end of the sill box-section, in the rear wheelarch. Pull that out and spray in lots, getting it up into the higher part of the wheelarch section if you can.
I welded in some new metal on mine and when the sill was open it was apparent how little rustproofing they sprayed in the sills. Some, but not enough.
If its bad in this area it will fail the MOT.

Thanks for all your replies folks. I was really wondering about the rust mainly, as we all know what a pain in the jacksie it is to repair.

I'd forgotten about the door locks - my old one broke it's drivers door one, and it was ÂŁ90 (10 years ago).

'Wedge' Rovers are much better protected from rust than, say, any Ford from the time.
 
I have a 214SEi and the only thing I have noticed is bubbling on one of the rear arches
Only rust on mine is the nearside rear arch, it is pretty bad but not worth repairing as it does not result in mot failure and the car is worth a few hundred quid at best. They dont usually rust too bad unless you park them in the sea :D
