Any of the cheapo (and expensive) stores like Wilco's poundland etc, sell a multi socket for cars, just a couple of quid. It consists of 2 usb sockets and 2 cigar lighter sockets. They are just about the right size to fit inside the ashtray. I had to cut mine away a little bit, but then it dropped in. The cable runs inside the tunnel and goes up to the spare terminals inside the fuse panel.

When not in use the top of the ashtray flips down and the sockets are hidden.

 

I have a plan for a clock/thermometer/ice warning(!)/usb thingy and have a spare, used ashtray and deconstructed usb connector ready to mod but this is on the back burner while the sun shines...

Thanks for all the ideas.....to be honest maybe i'll just try and find the plain black one so it doesn't stang out so much. Where can you get them?

 

scrap yard springs to mind or if you dont like rummaging, get one from mgfntf bits.
