What have you done to your MGF MGTF today? (Second Part)

Today have got to remove the failed front pipe.. Dammned thing has broken in the flexi. The outer mesh is fine it is the inner corrogated bit that has failed and this pipe was new in January.

This is the second one to fail like this .............................. first one was the replacemnt on Blue and now the one on the 75th has failed. Obviously cheaply made and the supplier wants it back to inspect as I made a complaint.. of course I have to pay for everything and will not have an exhaust while ths is being done but that does not seem to bother them one little bit.

Anyone have a suggestion where to get a decent 4 bolt flange front pipe that won't fall apart in a ew thousand miles?

MOT day, another year another pass.

Did get an advisory though on the wheel arch liner catching the wheel when on full lock

I have had this before, but it’s an easy one to fix.

Get a hair drier or heat gun on the area and then using something like a piece of wood or the handle of a hammer, push it back and secure with a self tapper (if necessary).

Good luck.

Decided to finally replace the badly cracked plastic rear screen on my TF 160 which I should have done a year ago as I've had a MGF Mania glass rear screen panel hanging around the house for around 4 years doing nothing! Too dark to take picture of shiny new glass screen in so you have to make do with the manky old one I took out :p

It’s MOT day today so fingers crossed, car is washed and waxed as I always like to present a clean car for inspection.
She is first in at 8am so should be done and dusted by 9 🤞🤞🤞

Took the F in for its MOT and I am pleased to say she passed with flying colours, no advisories and the inspector couldn’t believe the condition of the car for 25 years old.

I am more than happy with this and the car will now be treated to the new cam belt, tensioner and water pump next week.

Cheers all, Kenny

Not actually my car but my brothers...swapped over the bonnet on his TF with him for one which did not have serious lacquer peel and rust spots
Finally had some time to do some work on my 2006 TF (bought with engine dismantled) got everything back together on the engine, filled with water and it begun draining out....looks like either the metal engine coolant pipes or thermostat housing may be the culprit. Anyway, with the coolant filled turned engine over, fired once then died, used some easy start and it fired up but again died, checked for fuel, looks like fuel pump may be dead!......back to drawing board, will check fuel pump when my brother brings his pipe release pliers over, I have a spare so if its dead not really an issue....pipes are a pain though :(

I appreciate that is a pain, but the fact it started and ran after a major engine rebuild should be hugely encouraging to you matey - good work!

Fuel pump on 2006 TF was dead, changed for one I had spare(bought in 2018) and car started no problem :) water leak still on it but has slowed considerably, will wait until I can get car in the air before looking to sort it! Found out clutch arm has seized so that's the next job as will need to get the clutch working to get it on my ramps. Stopped for the day now as its become very warm outside

Not today, but forgot to post this when it happened.
Came out of work.
Put laptop in boot.
Took out shopping bags.
Threw jacket in boot
Closed boot.

Unfortunately, somewhere prior to step 4 I also "put car keys in jacket pocket". After looking at the car stupidly for a couple of minutes I called home to ask the Mrs to come get me.
And bring a Hammer.

The (sort of) good news was that I had a spare tail light cluster at home, so no messing about with trying to remove the boot lid.

Incomplete list of things I have fixed since I bought my MGF 75th Anniversary (with brand new MOT 🤬) some 5 weeks ago:
  1. Replaced coolant pipe assembly and the "snake pit" hose.
  2. Fixed loose gearstick gaiter holder and loose bolts on gearchange mechanism
  3. Replaced the totally fcuked spheres w/ some refurbed ones, replaced the missing spring and washer on one. Fixed the bodged knuckle gaiter.
  4. Derusted hood linkages and washed and preserved leather seats (with leather soap and dubbin)
  5. Fitted a new regulator to the alternator
  6. Fastened all loose front stabilser nuts and bolts - refitted dislodged bush.
  7. Bled the brakes, which were previously not bled correctly and hence had a scary brake behaviour.
  8. Yesterday, I bled the hardly disengaging clutch, which led to a massive free travel with no disengagement at all.
Finally, by cleaning the master cylinder, applying some magic and a vacuum pump for bleeding I managed to get decent pressure and disengagement again. Perfect pressure point now and I can now get it into 1st gear without stopping the engine first, which is really convenient
  9. Found the engine bay fan not working.....
To be cont'd.

Glad to provide some entertainment Gents!! I've even warned a couple of new members NEVER to put their keys down in the boot. Must be getting feeble minded. The other bits of good news were:
1. It wasn't raining
2. Original TF light clusters are actually quite robust. They need a fair bit of bashing in.

Next time ( ) I'll ask her to bring a couple of sharp chisels as well to speed the process up.
Working from home today so lunchtime interlude was starting on changing the rear upper ball joints. Was going well until the torxs stripped, a job for the angle grinder I think.

I always try to heat the bolted connection with a torch prior to giving it a treatment with the "convincer"* - which makes the use of the torx-bit gratuitous.

Well, an all round trip of 200 miles to get my soft ride kit fitted. Coming home I could not believe the difference the kit has made? On the left hand side before, it felt like any bump would make the body hit the subframe, now it actually feels it hits the shock absorbers and comes back. Yes, it's still a touch harsh, as it should be, but a big bump does not bounce you out of the car as before.
I agree makes a big difference to the car, pricey
Though , the cost of the bilstein kit has doubled in 10 years , next thing you could do to make the car even more plusher is to line the door panels, rear wings
Floor and boot with sound
Deadening self adhesive
Film , makes a huge difference
I just replaced my engine mounts in polybush as the originals had a bit of play
Big mistake! The car now feels like an old fordson tractor, steering wheel
Shaking on tickover
I have managed to get
Some new original rubber
Mounts so thats my job

Oddly, as I sat about the garage while the guy did the car, I read a magazine called Classic cars, and they had an article about just that, sound proofing with a stick-on 3 layer plastic. Is it expensive to do, and does it work in cutting out all that noise mate?
I used something like dodo mat its 2mm bitumen with silver foil over and self adhesive , the rear wings you can access from the side vents , just pull them
Out and you can get your arm in to stick to inner
If you remove boot carpet
You can access from there to do the last bit , obviously
You dont need to cover every square inch just as much as is practical , its a bit like a kitchen sink drainer , they used to stick
a small square of bitumen
To make it less tinny !
When i slam the doors rather than sounding like an
Empty biscuit tin its like a modern mercedes !
Also the speakers can cope with more volume and bass with less distortion as theres no resonance
After i did mine and went for a drive if i was blindfolded i would have bet £500 I was in a different car , if the car is for keeps do it , I have had mine 10 years now and have done nearly every mod you can do , 8 years ago subframes
Came out and were galv and powdercoated , just as good now , bit of a hobby car as I have to tinker with something
