Door Card Clips

Fitted puddle lights to my TF today. While the door cards were off I grabbed the chance to re-grease the window mechanisms, replace a couple of busted door card clips and remove any blockages and dirt that accumulated in the drain channels.

I did similar yesterday, greasing up the window mechanism. However, being stupid, I decided to pull the bottom of the cards off rather than walk ten yards for the correct tool. All went well until the last two clips. The card came off, but left the clips and a bit of the card on the door. Not the end of the world, but what is the best way of replacing them?

I picked about ten up (originals) from our sponsor when I was there a while back just to keep in for use when needed. Cheap as chips and they just slot into the door card.

Rectifiers are solid state and work until they blow, so if its still charging I am pretty sure that they are ok, maybe rotten connections or corrosion would hamper the alternators ability. Maybe the bearings are on the way out.

I did not know that about rectifiers. I thought maybe one diode could pop.
I am getting a very very high pitched whine. My battery is charging but not as much as it should. My alt is 14 years old.
Its going to be sunny, so investigation to track down the noise is on.

Diodes can pop, then of course they will not work. Maybe your battery has seen better days or has developed a fault.
Some electronics can produce a high pitched whistle, mainly thyristors when they are firing, and more so when they are regenerating (dissipating load or stored energy from a braking motor). Not sure if the alternator has thyristors or SCR's for rectification as they can rectify but I would doubt it diodes make more sense.

On Saturday:

  • Changed Oil funnel and oil cap
  • Changed and bleeded N/S front caliper
  • Changed to SS horn brackets

On Saturday night
  • Strange noise and clearly some piece of metal detaching from car

On Sunday:
  • Found the culprit: lost one of the bolts fixing the rear anti-roll bar.
  • Fixed it :)

Fitted new (second hand) fuel pump to my red TF 115 (1.6 model)....was an interesting experience as the one in it was a white top so fleabay ordered another white top....It would appear the one in it wasn't the original as was the top was damaged, also the locating lug wasn't there and the power feed cables had been spliced onto it. Found out the metal retaining ring also wouldn't fit onto the "new" unit I had purchased due to the lug. After sawing (botching) off the lug it fitted ok and started up :)

Now I've had a quick scan of google but can't find any info on the pump units for the TF 115....I know the MGF's had a different unit, different connector and a red retaining ring so can only assume that:

a) the older unit was fitted to the 115's (as with door mirrors, etc.) and would explain the spliced new style power block
b) Someone has swapped the tanks over

If anyone has any info I'd be interested to know.....it may also be useful for others with a TF 115

Walked past it at the weekend about 25 times, thinking I really should drive that again soon.

Then dropped a folding chair on the bonnet and dented it - is that Karma? :)

While your waiting for Talkingcars pics, here's a few of mine which I did around 18 months ago...feel inspired and spurred on :)
Feeling inspired? 'I am... I say I am'.

Nice job. Snazzy bit of seam welding there.
For 13 years old my subs are in pretty good condition. I ran out of time last year as the weather became too damp for epoxy.

How is the paint job holding up after 18 months?

Actually pretty good, After getting as much rust off as possible with an angle grinder with wire brush attached and a drill with wire brush attached to get into areas the angle grinder couldn't fit, I basically brush painted near neat phosphoric acid (85%) all over it and once left a couple of days I re-wire brushed and used red oxide as a base coat primer (2 coats), once that had dried I finished off with 3 coats of wilkinsons or possibly Aldi (I can't remember) external black gloss.

My next job is to fit a refurbished rear subframe which will have the same treatment :)......but this time I thought ahead and bought a second hand one to refurb rather than have the car laid up whilst I weld, treat and paint :)

Went to pump up my suspension on my F, however; my cheap grease gun pump had the connector fall apart when fitting it so couldn't do that so I fitted a Parrot Bluetooth unit to it instead :)
