What does your Mk3 200 sound like at idle?

Hi guys, what does your Mk3 sound like at tick over? I get a distinct sound which seems like it's from the tappets.
A bit like a very mild diesel sound.

I don't know if this is normal or not. I don't remember hearing the noise when I first got the car a few months back, but it may just be that I didn't notice it.

Does anyone else have a similar sound at tick over?

Also I've got a very slight whinning noise at idle too from the drivers side, but I can't quite pin point it. Sounds a bit like a TV test card. Could this be the cam belt too tight as it was changed just a couple of weeks ago?

Thanks

Diesel sound is it at cold or hot or both?
Whine is more likely to be the alternator belt is too tight and it's the alternator bearings are under too much load.
Try slackening off the belt slightly.
It's either. As for the whinning. I don't remember the noise before the cambelt change. Does alternator belt need removing when doing a cam belt change?

Could the noises be linked?

My 200 makes funny noises, guess it could be described as deisel like, and a friend of mine said is was the tappets.. My exhaust is going AGAIN so that's making a noise at the front..
Blimey yours sounds just like mine, even my exhaust sounds like it blows a bit at the front?

Thing is, is the sound normal for a 200?

if the tappets are making a noise and its not an oil burner (diesel)
then CHECK THE OIL!!!!!!! :iwstupid:

as for the other noise it could be the power stearing pump bearings under too much stress instead of the alternator,
i should know cos mine are shagged!!!!!! :sad3:

anyone know where i can get a 2nd hand one really cheap????

Oil was changed when cam belt was done. :p

So the general consensus is that it is NOT normal for the engine to sound tappety?
What can be done?
