Hi guys has anyone found out where the water comes in to the boot on the rover and mg range, when i had my r414i I could not find the leak and now I have the same problem on my 54 mg zs td no sunroof and I can not find the leak, I am half tempted to rip all the carpets out and sit onsite and get somebody to pour dyed water over the car or put a hose pipe on it, any suggestions are welcome as my sub box is socking the water up and I have a baby on the way and don't want to get the pram damp etc

Thanks Chris

Not sure whether yours is the saloon or that hatch mate, but I had a swimming pool boot on my R45 saloon last year. Turned out to be simple but devious: I'd tried literally everything, then in a flash of inspiration pulled off the boot edge seal. Despite it being perfect, the lip that it pushes onto had almost completely rotted away below the rear screen!

Had my local garage dude fabricate a new lip, which he welded into place. Sealed it, rustproofed and painted it, cleaned up the underside of the rubber seal, bunged it all back together and - bingo - dry as a bone since. Cost me less than ÂŁ50 for the whole thing.

Worth checking if everything else fails, hope you get it sorted soon.

leak

hi
this is a common place for leaks on hatches, i did mine last year. i used bonding to seal the loint on filler, the bonding i use is same type as windscreen bonding and i always keep a tube in my mastick gun. its great stuff, used it for lotsof jobs. i used it on the hatch seal, removed seal, clean both surfaces then applied a bead around the metal lip and refitted the seal job done.
have you got an arch liner fitted on you zs, mk2 cars didnt get them so i fitted one to both our zs cars, helps stop filler neck rusting and water geting at the filler neck to body seal.

leak

Hi mate
i have a spare arch liner, as for the leak try removing the shelf and passeneger side carpet trim and next time it rains get inside car with rear seats down and lay in boot area to see if you can sopt where water is entering the car.
take a look at the panel join next to seal a few inches above the light, i had water entering the boot beneath this joint but after sealing the hatch seal with the windscreen bonding did the job.

How much would you want for it? I will take a look tomorrow as my mrs will be in work and my son will be in Nersery so will have a bit of time.

A good downpour today shows water getting into the boot of the saloon. That would suggest its the rubber boot seal that maybe needs refitting with silicone sealer or the sunroof drain holes being blocked and water is flowing into the rear of the car. Good spell of weather and I will have a go at both jobs.
Had to remove the boot carpet and give it a good dry out as it smells. At least I am making progress.

I've just got back from a week in North Wales so no work done on the 45 as yet. The car is facing up hill and I got curious and checked the boot as its been sat here all week. Boot soaking wet again. Its time I was sat in the boot with a torch and see if I can see where its coming in. Can I trust the wife to open the boot after?

Check the spot welds a few inches up from the lights as water was coming in from there on mine and sealed up. I drove 30 miles to my mothers when roads are socking and checked boot and socking, so had the hose pipe on facing filler pipe and bang water getting in to boot so sealed up with underseal and I still get water coming in after driving on wet roads, only on passinger side tho

I've narrowed it down to the offside about a foot and a half into the boot. Around the lights it is bone dry so my suspicion is something to do with the rear window seal. Once I have done the torch in boot job it will probably need to go to Autoglaze or such other for refitting. I thin line of silicone sealer around the window gutter might be a solution too. Will crack on with it today.

Thanks for all the concern about getting out of the boot of handbrakes being played with by SWMBO.

Right guys is there anyway of water getting in to the boot on the passinger side? I sealed all the seams with underseal Evan there the rear bumper bolts to the arch but it seems to be still coming in where I sealed it up I Evan took the fuel filler pipe off and sealed the seam around the the filler pipe goes, it's really starting to pee me off now as my sub box is getting wet Evan tho I got a dehumidifier in the boot. It's only getting in when driving in wet weather

It's not as I've checked where the water is coming in as it's not coming in as bad as before, it's a trail of water and mud where the bump bolts the the arch and last night I shone a torch in the arch towards the back and I seen the light in the boot but couldn't see where to as I was on my own and at 3am I didn't want to take the light out and see. I will rip the wheel off in a hour or so rip the light out in the garage and shine a touch in again and see if I can spot it

Hardly an expert as I've had my first Rover a week, it's a Loon and I don't like Loons so haven't exactly had many ... or any!

But - we put her up on the ramps yesterday to check her over properly. One problem was spotted which I'll ask about elsewhere but as far as a wet boot is concerned have you considered the plug at the bottom of the wheel well? Do not assume that water drips out of there if it's wet from the outside, it can just as easily seep IN that way too. In my case that would be consistent with a fine "mist" of damp on top of the spare and on the inside of the boot lid while I took the carpet out to dry it off indoors.

I've sorted mine out it was coming in from the wheel arch, where the bumper bolts to the arch the 2 panels split and then the water will get in, I've siliconed them up Evan the inside and inside around the fuel filler pipe goes an it's all good now, Evan the other side was starting to get wet and I've sorted that. I've got 3 little pilot holes in the spare wheel well to let water drain out. Water will not coming in though the spare wheel well if it do it will drain out again from where it come in from
