Want to Buy a TF from .org member

Hi I'm looking to buy a TF from a forum member as it is very risky to buy one from pistonheads or autotrader, because you never know what happened to the car over the years,

here I know there are many people who love and care for their runners a lot, so the chance for me getting a solid TF is great.

SO to cut to the chace, after many research and talking to the owners, I'd like to get

-a 135 or 160 TF,
-post 2003 model,
-HG sorted, but more than 5 or 6 months ago, because I've been said it doesn't mean that just because HG was changed, everything will be OK, give some time (few months) and see if it has been done right,
-definitely full service history

I'm in the market so any offers will be considered, all I'm after is this beautiful piece of British engineering so please tell me if the requirements above will help me get a fault free TF.

Any other comments or suggestions will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

This is unbelievable I was just about to write that I like the devils (I saw a few pics of your car and all I can say is yummy :candy:) and Gos black beauty TF, when you two put the first comments. Talk about coincidence.

I'll PM that guy to see what happens, but otherwise I'd prefer a black one, but other colors are ok, like Red, Blue, BRG, yellow, they're all perfectin my eyes and 11 spoke alloys would be perfect, but not black (don't like black wheels as in the distance they look as you have spare wheels on ). Price will be discussed, opened to all offers for now.

As I've said I've got the cash prepared but I'm not stupid, definitely going to take careful steps when buying, as they can bite me hard, well at least my wallet, and cause me much grief.

Tell me your opinion on this http://www.mgtfr.webs.com/, the only problem is it's too much $$$ for me, but worth the price.

Richard is well known on here.

it is very heavily modded indeed and very unique.

you really need to look at a lot of cars to see what you really want.

I would suggest attending a meet close to you and just check out everyones car in the flesh so to speak. when you have seen some of the mods close up your opinion can change.

look forward to seeing your pride and joy when you make that choice and nice to have you in the fold.

Cheers Paul but mine doesn't fit the extremely stringent criteria and I'm in no rush, perhaps six months and even then I'm still not 100% I wanna spend ÂŁ13k on a weekend toy :)
I'll be intersted to see how many low mileage, much loved stunning cars this dude excludes because he's **** scared of a ÂŁ300.00 HGF failure.

I'll be intersted to see how many low mileage, much loved stunning cars :err:this dude excludes because he's **** scared of a ÂŁ300.00 HGF failure.
Why so negative given he's done EXACTLY the right thing in doing some research on the car he wants to buy - then coming onto an enthusiast site to look for one?...

1: He Hasn't Asked for low mileage?....

2: Wouldn't You insist on FSH?...

3: Given the cars history of HGF wouldn't you like to see 'proper' proof of repair? (more so on early TF's) and given poor repairs will almost certainly lead to early failure of the new HG (dropped liners/cooked heads), wouldn't you want it to have a few miles under it's belt to make sure it's not just been 'bodged up to get shut'?....

4: ÂŁ300 for a HG repair?...

Clearly, this guy has done his homework and as such should be applauded as there is a good chance he'll end up with a decent car which instead of recieving the usual slatting the F/TF gets, will mean he'll have a positive view of the car to pass onto other possible owners..

Interestingly his conditions are the EXACT set of conditions that I set out with when I bought my TF160, yes!, it took a little time to find the right one - but when I did, I then had 2.5 years of virtual trouble free motoring making my TF one of the best cars I've owned.

MarkL,
You can take it any which way you want and I'm not sure what point you're trying to make re-quoting his entire wish list as my point was regarding HGF and very simple; by virtue of insisting on HG replacement and specifing when it had been done is going to exclude dozens and dozens of superb cars, more than likely with low miles.
Hell, let's not forget the many people who come on here berating the fact that their HG has gone again.
Bravo for coming here [and MarkL; have a day off dude - of course a full history is great and yes a decent HGF repair history is worthwhile; jeesh] but let me tell you the best advice I received when I came; get yourself the one you want and set three hundred aside *in case* the HG goes.
Negative my arse.
R.

EDIT
Apologies to the OP for the "**** scared of HGF" comment, that wasn't intended personally despite how it reads.

Will.....

Your arse may very well be negative, but thats not the issue here.....

What is the issue, is HGF, and it's more than fair to say that with the 'K' it's not a case of 'if' but when..... so based on around 7 years of F and TF ownership, as well as running the local F-register owners meets and thus speaking to countless F/TF owners, I'd say it's not an unreasonable ask to expect to see some sort of proof of HG repair - MAINLY because many early TF's were VERY lucky to see 30K miles before failure so any cars over this mileage 'IMHO' are on borrowed time - lets be honest you'd rather the previous owner pay for the repair than yourself.

You quote the advice you were given which it seems has served you well...

I quoted the TF buying advice I was given and my previous F ownership experiance (which served me well) only without the *arsie* comment.

Jeesh?...

Setting aside the HG issue Bartops is the only car currently for sale on the site that I would buy.
I doubt anyone has looked after a car more than that dude has.
A link has already been posted above.
Good luck with your hunt.
R.

I knew who he was.

For the record, I don't think two people with different opinions on the importance of previous HG replacement is as unhealthly as people are suggesting.

EDIT:
To the OP, a heads up that you were in Slovenia would have made your specific HGF requirement far more understandable, at least to me anyway.
It is completely logical that, if you're coming over to England to buy and take a car back home you would want to cover every eventuality.
For me, in England, buying a TF and not having to worry about HGF because I can get an MG Rover specialist to turn up to my house and have it replaced on my drive for a measly ÂŁ300.00 is clearly not a viable option for you.
Like I say, good luck with your search.

Maybe this one will fit the bill.
2003 on a 03 plate 1800 135 TF Sprint in silver 38,000 miles with a main dealer service for every year of its life. Being a special edition it gets the bright pack (chrome door handles and body mesh all round), the sports pack (ABS brakes, 4 pot red front brake calipers and 16'' alloys).
The head was skimmed and new inproved head gasket fitted in November 2009 at a MG main dealer with a cost of over ÂŁ1,100 the MOT will be done at time of sale as it is due in April. The brake pads were done 10,000 miles ago as was the cam belt. there is not a car park dent on the car and has the correct Good Year F1 tyres all round, front new and rear @ 50%. The alloys have the slightest of mark on 2 wheels (got the paint to touch up at Stoneliegh), the rest being clean and unmarked.
It also has a colour coded factory fitted hardtop and a full sized spair wheel (it came with the inflation kit but I dont like them). It also has a chrome set of roll bars of the strongest type (in my opinion) the seats are unscuffed and are black leather with grey inserts to match the smokestone trim.
I want ÂŁ3,900 for it as it realy is in top condition.
If you want I will sell the private plate with it for ÂŁ250 as I havent put it on yet, the number is MG52 ONE and if you look on the DVLA web site you will see they are ÂŁ799.
I also have a new grey full leather set of seats, pods and gaiters also not fitted yet I would sell with if you wanted them for ÂŁ250.

ummmmm your tf sounds nice so I'd really like to see some pics. Private plate is not needed and I'd also like to know if we can discuss the price a liitle bit over th PM. tell me a bit more with HG experience, was it changed,.....

#26 ·
Yes the HG was changed and the head skimmed in November 2009.
Oh and I did a typo with the milage it is 38,000 not 48,000,I have changed the original post now.
I think the problem is my pictures are to big but will try using photobucket now.

#32 ·
Gary this is exactly the kind of tf I'm after, with those pictures you seriously got my attention, love those chrome hoops, 11 spoke alloys, and the red calipers, color is great, interior is also very tidy, like the hard top extra, service history,...like top post says it checks all the boxes,

If it's ok i have some proposals that I want to check but yours is definitely at the top for now, so I'd like to let you know my decision i a few days if it's ok, just to be sure.

We have a very nice MG TF 135 kitted out with a LOT of Mike Satur goodies such as all the alloy/chrome trim you could possible want, exhaust system, lowered suspension, MS quick shift kit etc. We have all the reciepts for warranty issue in regards to modified parts and it has also had the HG done at Christmas and has not been used since, apart from doing a weekly check. It is in XPG and has 30k (will have to double check) on the clock. It is a PRIME example of a TF which you would see at a show from MS or the TF Center themselves and its one of the last cars to be produced. If you are genuinely interested then drop me a PM and I will dig out further details but I can tell you now, if your expecting a bargain, then this will not be it. This is a proper cared for, enthusiast, no money spared TF. The 6-7k worth of reciepts within the last 2 years from Mike Satur alone will show this!

I am going to buy bartops 80th anniversary edition TF, its one of only 40 odd made in 160 and green. It was top of my list when I was looking but none came up after 3 months of serching so I gave up. It is a speacial edition like mine and was always a if one comes up will buy car for me.
I can state it has nothing to do with the car I have now which is probibly the better car to keep as it has had the head gaskit and head done and his one hasn't. My car is from the 15 or so cars I looked at in the flesh, 30 odd phoned for information and 100's thought unworthy from the adds a most perfect car.My list of requirements was far longer than yours even down to the correct make of tyres for the car. It is the only TF I have ever seen with not one trace of white on the dipstick and this was from cars that have had the head gaskit replaced in the last few months. If you check my thread 'does anyone have bartop phone no.' you will see the reason for selling.
