I have a 2000 x mgf vvc, there seems to be a metalic tap on tick over from the top left hand side of the cam covers as you look at it from the back.

I have been advised on possible hydraulic lifters faulty or the VVc unit faulty.

I have flushed the engine and tried to oile changes, i have tried Forte Upper cylinder lubricant but it still taps....

its seems lounder when cold.

I was toyinf with the idea of a new performance cylinder head to replace the lot but i would like to see if there maybe a cheaper option.

any comments would be appreciated.

welcome to .org :D

such are the joys of owning a VVC. If its not too loud its fairly normal, particularly when cold, some peeps liken it to a diesel :shake:

metalic tick....

this sounds more like a tap quite loud too....

it goes around 2.5 - 3k....

I would say thought with 145bhp it aint very quick....

it does not seem very responsive, when you put your foot down its seems to take a while to get going...

its not bad but i would not call it quick.... i.e its does not seem like 7 seconds to 60 more like 8.5.

the head was done 10k ago could the timing belt be out by 1 tooth ???

how do other 145bhp vvc's compare....

Mine makes the metallic sound at 2.5k :) I assumed it was a heatshield or something moving - I actually quite like the sound for some reason and find myself bliping the throttle to hear it :D

Guys i would be quite concerned.

it sounds like your timing is slightly out and the pistons are only just hitting the valves

Ive only just had this. a knocking sound at idle. i checked the cams and then the timing belt to find the tensioner had let go so the belt was really slopy. tensioned it back up. the knocking was still faint but appeard to go away once the engine heated up. however it was too late, the belt must have slipped a tooth and has now wrecked the engine.

id just check the timing on your belts to make sure. better to be safe than sorry.

Thats interesting, as the problem really appeared for me after the 4 year service, when the cambelts were changed. Its having an MOT tomorrow, so I'll ask them to have a check..
cheers

Sorry I disagree here, a certain amount of noise from VVC units has been confirmed as normal.

However excessive noise is normally indicative of a VVC unit failing.

Yeah mines not excessive - say for example I rev to 3krpm, as the revs fall to 2.5k I hear this sound - not on idle or anything :)

good test is to put your car in gear and push it, if you hear clunking i would check your timing. better to be safe than sorry especially with somthing so expencive.

Mines Excessive alot louder when hot, sounds like a ball bearing in the cylinder more of a clatter then a knock, too metalic.

i have been told by several garages it wont get any worse as a spigot and pin sometimes falls off or breaks and this cause the vvc to become very noisy.

SO....

I Decided to get the head replaced.

Got one from the head center 12 months warranty 12k, £494 all in.

The vvc's have been checked and they will warranty them as well.

fitting is £210.00 from a local rover specialist.

not been fitted until the 11/7/06..

watch this space.

Cross MY fingers...

Thats quite a good price for that little lot!!.......

The `average` HGF repair can cost that much using the existing head!!

I concur.

If the job is done well, please let us know who did it.

May be worth noting down for the future!

You should contact Mike Satur. He does a "anti rattle" kit for the VVC mech.
Don´t know what the price is, but it should be in his online pricing details though,
