It has been 5 years since the last MG forums tyre survey (and 10 since the very first!!!) - and in that time, some great tyres have come and gone. Thankfully, some truly dire tyres have also been consigned to the great tyre dump in the sky too - but what are the best tyres for the MGF and TF? I think it is time to get a new list of 'approved' tyres from owners, and identify those that are to be avoided like the plague!

Form as below:

Tyre survey:

MG Model (F or TF):
Tyre manufacturer and type:
Wheel size:
Profile- Front:
Profile- Rear:
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!):
Subjective comments:
Cost(optional):
Mileage on rear tyres(optional):

Even if the tyre you use is already listed, please return your thoughts!

Here are the four tyres I have had direct experience with:

MG Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Goodyear NCT-3
Wheel size: 15"
Profile- Front: 185/55
Profile- Rear: 205/50
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 5
Subjective comments: Average grip in dry, occasionally scarey in the wet. Good ride and wear.
Cost(optional): n/a - they were OEM!
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 28,000 miles

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 215/40
Profile- Rear: 215/40
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 8.5
Subjective comments: Excellent tyres- good dry grib and superb wet grip. Ride good too! Feedback not the best though - my impression is that the side walls are too flexible.
Cost(optional):around 200 quid IIRC
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 18,000 miles (including many track days!)

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 215/40
Profile- Rear: 215/40
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 9
Subjective comments: Excellent tyres- good dry grib and superb wet grip. Ride remains good. Feedback better than the previous generation tyre, but still no competitor for the Bridgestone S-02 IMO. But the side walls are a good deal stiffer than the GS-D2.
Cost(optional): I forget!!!
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 14,000miles (a lot of track days!!!!)

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Bridgestone S-02
Wheel size: 15"
Profile- Front: 195/50
Profile- Rear: 205/50
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 10
Subjective comments: Superb in wet or dry. Superb communication. Very progressive at the limits of adhesion.
Cost(optional): around 300 quid fitted
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 10,000miles (even more track days!!!!!)

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Bridgestone S-02
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 205/45
Profile- Rear: 205/45
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 10
Subjective comments: Superb in wet or dry. Superb communication. Very progressive at the limits of adhesion.
Cost(optional): around 300 quid fitted
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 10,000miles (only one track day: can't believe they're not butter! :()

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Toyo Proxes T1R
Wheel size: 16"
Profile front: 195/45
Profile rear: 215/40
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 9.5
Subjective comments: Great in wet or dry. Goodcommunication, with nice steering on this combination. Very progressive at the limits of adhesion.
Cost(optional): around 300 quid fitted
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): too early to say yet, only just fitted them in the last 3,000 miles

Cost(optional): £38.12 + plus £17.90 del (for 4) and £10 per wheel to fit and balance
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): n/a yet

just need to add that in the snow obviously they slipped but they were so easy to 'read' it never caused a problem

Subjective comments: Superb in wet or dry, pulled up on sheet ice with barely a shimmy. pulled up a fairly steep hill from standing, with ice on it, we also have on occasion had to drive her cross country, grip in mud was fantastic, not so good on wet grass but still got there.
Cost(optional):

Ammended double typo on sizes. Sorry

Subjective comments: Excellent grip in wet or dry. Stick to the road like glue when pushed in the dry. My car is lowered so I can't compare the ride comfort.
Cost(optional): Don't know, got the wheels off fleabay, new tyres were already fitted.
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): Only had them on 2000 miles .

Cost(optional):cheaper then t1rs and gsd2s
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): done 4 k and they seem fine 7-8 mil left but will let you know lol

Subjective comments: The tyre that comes with the car. Only looses traction going up hills in the snow - when driven sensibly. Appears to run flat. Quite expensive.
Cost(optional): £90-£100 per tyre
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 13k so far

Dont you mean GSD2's????
Not necessarily, I had GSD3's on the ZR when I first bought it. :broon:

Model: F
Tyre manufacturer and type: Toyo Proxes T1-R
Wheel size: 15"
Profile front: 195/50
Profile rear: 205/50
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 9
Subjective comments: Good grip levels in both wet and dry conditions, also work surprisingly well on snow! Not too noisy, communicate well when you are the limit of their grip.
Cost(optional): £60 front, £70 rear.
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): unknown (although when fitted to the front wheels, on my ZR lasted around 9000 miles.)

Tyre manufacturer and type:Toyo Proxes T1R
Wheel size:16" 11 spoke
Profile- Front:205/45 ZR16 87W
Profile- Rear:225/40 ZR16 85W
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!):10
Subjective comments: Have had 2 sets of Toyo Proxes on standard 195 front and 215 rear and they have been superb (would award 9 - 9.5), this time I have upped the size to 205 front and 225 rear to give extra contact area and grip. I have as yet not been able to lose traction, even powering away from a T junction with steering lock on in the wet.
Cost(optional): £350
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): less than 1k so far.

As you can see, they are a directional tread.

you can use gsd3s its just rover suggested it wasn't a good idea because they hadn't tested them.
They haven't tested any other either (other then yokos) so presumably they would issue a similar warning about them if the circumstances permitted.

3s are actually supposed to perform better then 2s if we are talking write ups and such.

They might be OK on a ZR....but GY and MGR say DO NOT fit to a TF, check the tyre sticky (top of forum section), there is a pdf of the advisory
Don't see why not, they're great tyres. Just don't last very long! I had 7k out of them fitted to the ZR!

Subjective comments: grip in dry great from new, however i feel they don't communicate well when on the edge of grip,(however this set up 16"and 40 profile compared to 15" 50 profile prob more the reason than tyre)
Cost(optional): bought with wheels(pricey)
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): 16,000 miles/18mths,just scraped through mot need changing(however this is not really true as i have had to change the rear passenger side about 3000 miles ago....roundabouts in mk!!!

Subjective comments: Hard tyre but had quite a bit of grip in both the wet and dry. When approaching the legal limit (1/2mm to go until the limit) they became very slipperly in wet)
Cost(optional): Came with car so no idea
Mileage on rear tyres(optional): I put 10,000 on them and they weren't new when I got the car.
