Trophy or TF160 Upgrade?

Hmmm, MeGan seems to be falling apart daily lately (there's now 11 things I need to sort on her!), so I'm thinking it might be time to cut my losses and chop her in for something newer. I figure I may as well get something with a bit more grunt while I'm at it.

So with that in mind, I've been thumbing through ebay and AT looking for F Trophy's and TF160's, but I really don't know what to go for. Seems I can pick up a Trophy or a 160 for pretty much the same money (I assume the trophy's have the premium because of their exclusivity).

Has anyone driven both? How do they compare? I've driven a TF135 and it felt like a kangaroo compared to my F, but I did only drive it round town to be fair. I've also heard that the Trophy's suspension is so hard it'll knock your teeth out, something my wife wouldn't be that keen on!

I'm actually really jarred off with the F, it's been perfect all summer, and in the space of three weeks it's literally broken everything in sight, and it's on 85K now so I imagine it's only going to get worse :(

I keep hearing the words "alfa spyder" in my mind too though...... :?

HELP! :?

For god sake don't go for the older style Alfa Spider (as in the version before the Brera)... its got far worse scuttle shake than the F/TF. And the auto-hoods are a nightmare for going wrong because they are actually pneumatic not electric.

Suppose I'd better give a sensible answer this time.

I would definitely say the Trophy!

The ride is not that much different to the 'normal' F's. Yes, it is a bit firmer but then you will come to really appreciate this when throwing it into the corners.

The engine is a beast that can handle pretty much anything thrown at it! (Believe me, I have tested this theory to exhaustion and the bugger still keeps asking for more! )

I don't know fully what MG/janspeed did, but it works! :broon:

they are no more expensive to maintain than any other F. Unless, like me, you just can't stop modding it!

They will definitely become THE model to have in a few years time! Most certainly will be the collectors item out of all of the F/TF various models and Limited Editions.

I would buy one of the first edition Trophy's! The 'proper' Special Editions as these had the most money/time spent on them!

Do it!!!! You will NEVER regret it I assure you! :hyper:

Cheers bud. But why oh why cant I have a green one, sniff sniff.

Thats put my mind at ease, everyone I've spoken to said the ride was bone shaking, mines less than comfy with the 16's so I guess it isnt gonna be that much different.

The Trophy 160/MG TF160 question has raised its head before and will probably always be a touchy debate between owners of the respective models.

The link below, if it works, is to a forum discussion last year which evolved into a Trophy/TF 160 thing. You may have to cut and paste instead.

My part in the discussion was under the username David AP.

One year on and I still stand by my original observations. The Trophy 160 is an incredible hidden gem which as yet hasn't been recognised and therefore the pricing remains achievable for many. I bet I can't say this in a few years time!

You might recognise one or two posters on this forum also contributed to the linked thread and at least one of them still has his Trophy.

When I changed my old MPI 'F' my first choice was a Trophy, it's got the looks and performance and that little bit of exclusivity, test drove many examples but could not find a nice one so plumped for the TF160..

The Trophy is the best looking and has the better suspenders but the TF160 is a better 'all round' package, it's better equiped, has a better interior, and the steering is in a different league to the Trophy..... AND the TF has the upgrade option of Headlights that actually work!!...

But the trophy blue and yellow are a pretty big part of this cars appeal to some, as far as I have gathered. I love mine and love the colour, and I like that it is a bit different and unique to anything else on the road, but i'm not convinced when I come to sell in the distant future the 'enthusiasts' will be 'enthusiastic' about the fact it has been stripped of a big part of its orginal-ness.

Just something I have pondered a few times, makes no difference really as I won't be selling for a long time, just wondered.

Yours being a different colour I don't think will matter too much particularly with its history and does in a way help make it interesting.

I think what will be more important with the trophys will be that they keep their unique parts and specification, ie the wheels, body work, trim and seats plus this all matching up with the correct chassis numbers.

Hi, im kinda in the same situation. I currently drive a F VVC and its drives fantastic but i do like the look of the trophy. Is it worth me trading mine in for a trophy or is it possible with a few mods and upgrades to make mine into a trophy as it were.

It is very easy to make a trophy look-a-like as many people do. Replica spoilers are widely available and 16" TF wheels are popular though not quite the same.
A few simple bolt on mods will take the VVC up to the same sort of power output as the trophy as I have done on mine and our rolling road day back in the summer at Reading showed :) .
