hi all, new to this site, looking for some advice if poss.. I've recently acquired a rover 75 v6 connoisseur, auto, w reg with 41k warranted miles.. I've had a rover 25 in the past but abandoned it due to the usual HG probs.

I was of the view (maybe misguided?) that the v6 was not prone to HG failure, a work colleague (part time car enthusiast) has told me they are as likely to go as any of the rover engines..

Have I made an error? I don't have the funds (about to be made redundant!!) to pick up costly bills if they come.. i know crystal balls are hard to come by - but should I be worried!!

any advice welcome... tom in sunny Plymouth

The V6 is generally HGF trouble free i.e rarely happens unlike the K series do.

IT can happen to any engine in any car, there are known weak points in the cooling system etc that need to be kept in check get in to the 75 and zt section and post there the petrol boys will be more than happy to assist.

The thermostat in the v of the engine is the most known weak point so shine a torch in the v and see if there is any pinky staining there.

Oh and I would ignore your work colleague as he sounds like a "they all do that" kind of man when it comes to Rovers, not all K series engines suffer HGF I have had 3 so engined cars and only one had HGF.

I understand some of the early V6 'K' series engines had problems in the Rover 800, but by the time the Rover 45 and 75 came along, the problems had been pretty much resolved and the KV6 is pretty bulletproof.
I would be more worried about the cambelt,
Due for change at 90k OR TEN YEARS w reg will be year 2000 so ten year old and the cambelt change is expensive on the V6 at arround £600-700 to have done properly. Do you have any proof in the history that it has been changed.

Actually 90K or 6 years so has possibly been done in year 6 or will be due again in 2 years.
Or has not been done at all and it really would be living on borrowed time, costs around £5-600 to have the belts done on the V6.

That is the reason so many 5-6 year old V6's are for sale these days as people dont want to spend the money on them getting it done.
