sand it until there's no rust anymore, fill it with filler if you know how to do that then spray it with a colour that's close to your car's.

that's a quick fix to stop the rust and to save you some cash when you take it to a bodyshop for spraying.

OK. Bear with me as I'm new to all of this...
Would you recommend any particular filler or sand paper to use, or are they all much of a muchness?

you'll need two kinds of sand paper, the yellow dry one and the black one that's used with water.
I don't know how they're called over there, they're reffered to with numbers here.

you rub the rust off with the strongest sand papers first, fill it, and then sand it with water using the fine black sand paper.

go to a specialized shop and an employee will point you to the right products for sure.

the filler I use is a polyester mastic.

there are also products used to seal metallic objects that you could use if you have no idea how to work with the filler.
