There Is Something The Government Can Do!

In case you don't already know, Alistair Campbell, New Labour's Spin expert was hurriedly brought in to whitewash the Labour Government's role in MG-Rover's destruction.
You can see the approach he decided on quite easily:

Get Patricia Hewitt away from the cameras.
Repeat over and over "we will do all we can to save MG-Rover" ( which of course sounds useful but means absolutely nothing ).
Talk the Administrators into sounding vaguely optomistic.
Get Woodley, the Union boss and a Labour toady to sit up there with the Government and look sad.
Start a campaign to persuade the workers and the public that it is really the Phoenix 4 who are to blame for everything.
Finally it is essential that no one is allowed to put the question directly to a Government Minister - " WHY CAN'T THE GOVERNMENT TAKE A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF PHOENIX VENTURE HOLDING'S EQUITY?"

This is because they know very well indeed that they CAN do this within the EU regulations.
The French Government owns 20% of Renault.

It seems they have decided that the sacrifice of 20,000 West Midlands jobs with all that entails is preferable to upsetting some voters in more favoured parts of the country.

How do they sleep at night?

Theres a lot they could have done....

For a start, how hard would it have been, say, to specify that all public sector car derived vans had to be at most 1.4l (for tax reasons) and at least 100bhp for performance/safetly reasons?

That would have handed that sector to MGR - no-one else would have been in the frame!
