The V6's day at TS Autos

This morning we headed down to Stourbridge, not knowing where Terry's place was; as the sat nav had decided it could no longer accept full postcodes, but luckily we stumbled upon it after some vague directions from the Volvo dealer on the main road. I'd booked in to have the gearbox ATF changed and for Terry to have a look at the suspect VIS balance valve.

We received a very warm welcome from Terry and he made us a fantastic cuppa. The V6 went up on the jacks, and the undertray was off in a matter of seconds...complete with a dead bird and a screwdriver bit. Terry then set about flushing the gearbox through with clean fluid, and it was absolutely unbelievable what came out that drain plug...I guess this is what happens when the fluid is 30k miles overdue for a change:

Disgusting stuff, looks like a jug of bovril, bearing in mind this is supposed to be a nice clean red:

After 2 flushes we finally got clean stuff through. Terry had also found some wires that had worn through on the gearbox solenoid connector plug, and were shorting together, which explained the problems I'd had with it sometimes failing to shift above 3rd gear. We wrapped them insulation tape and then bunched the whole lot together, then Terry fitted the connector securely to its clip, unlike before when it had just been left to float around wherever.

This VIS problem has turned out to be a shot butterfly valve on the balance valve, this was due to the motor running constantly and straining at the shaft, eventually breaking it. I am currently after the single rear butterfly plastic valve, if anyone knows where I can get one on it's own, please let me know.

We also hooked the T4 up and enabled a few options, lazy venting and locking on the windows, and drive away auto locking, Terry also cleared all the fault codes stored on the car.

So I am really pleased, the car now glides through gear changes, you can barely feel them, just as it should be.

I'd like to say a big thank you to Terry and I thoroughly recommend him to anyone wanting work done on their car. He does a great job and is a fantastic guy to chat to, and when he says he knows every nut and bolt on our cars, he ain't kidding either. ;)

Cheers
