Just witnessed in one working day, No less than 4, yes 4 BMW's 1 series on the back of tow-trucks, hers a breakdown of the problems ( pardon the pun)

1) 2 cars had electrical problems

2) 1 car decided to set it self alight

3) and the other one's engine decided to fall out.

all witnessed around the birmingham area.

a bad day for BMW or what?

A solicitor friend of mine is currently experiencing lots of problems with his BMW 1 Series.

1. When he took delivery of the car he noticed that the paint was peeling on the back bumper, the dealer quickly sorted the problem however the problem is now evident on the front bumper.

2. The passenger sun visor has fallen off, dealer cannot order parts as they are not on system yet.

3. Stereo won't work on FM wavelength, 2 new aeriels have failed to correct the fault and the stereo has now been returned to Blaupunkt for repair leaving him without any ICE for over amonth.

4. Rear washer jet doesn't work, parts have been on order for 10 weeks.

5. Rear headrests are literally falling to pieces, parts have been on order for over a month.

He is now in the process of attempting to reject the car but the dealer is having none of it because he has already agreed for them to repair the faults.

He originally planned to buy a new Golf GTi but fell for the BMW marketing BS....sucker :rotflmao:

If anything else went wrong with it, would he be in a position to reject it then?

I hope so, get him to buy a ZS then :)

If these problems had occurred back in the 1970s with a BL car the Press would have had a field day.

Perhaps our friend should make a stink about his crappy BMW and naff after sales service in the media, and get someone to run a story about it all?

He'd have been far better off going for a ZR or ZS than either a Golf or BMW 1. It's not too late to get one now, to replace his trashy BMW...

This is very strange. Whatever you say about BMW - and lets face it, who doesn't? - they at least had reliability on their side. Now it appears they don't even have that.

What is going wrong with the German car industry? Mercedes have got themselves a terrible reputation for reliability, according to a Which? survey last year, Audi are right at the bottom of the reliability charts, with the Audi TT the most unreliable new car you can buy... why, all of a sudden, has everything that comes out of Germany become eurotrash? And why hasn't it dawned on the paying public that this is actually happening?

If the UK press want to do a massive exposé in the motor industry right now, surely this is more important as the MG-Rover debacle - after all, people are spending more money with these marques than they ever did with MG-Rover, so surely they have a right to know what they are buying?

longbridge lad, just out of interest, if you see cars on the back of tow-trucks, how do you know what kind of problems they have? That a huge amount of 1-series seems to drive around in the Birmingham area is astonishing.

And is this not a discussion for the Other Manufacturer Chat?

Maybe BMW cannot build a ÂŁ15000 car and get it right, due to never having to make as many compromises, as they would on their other products. I cant see the Focus/Golf buying sector really taking to this BMW 1-series, in anything other than small numbers, as its far too quirky, different, pricey, and uncompetative, as well as being more ulgy than even a Nissan Almera!
The 1-series will be a lowish volume selling model, that probably has most appeal to those with the Brand snobbery that BMW and other so called prestige car manufacturers are tying to attract. Its like the new BMW X3, it really aint much of a useful, rugged, or stylish 4x4, but it will sell to those who want the BMW brand at a lower entry price.
By the way what happened to the fairly unpopular 3-series compact model? I thought this was one of BMW's best looking and most sensible cars, but i know its never really been popular, or even much liked by other BMW drivers, as well as the motoring press.

Now, the public is not noticing that everything is "eurotrash" because you are wrong.

If you take a look at the new JD Power survey (the worlds biggest quality index for new cars) you will see that the situation is not bad. BMW is on the 3rd place, Mercedes 6th, Audi 8th. There have been problems especially at Mercedes, but they know it (and they don´t hide it), now the quality is rising again.

I agree about the quality of the 1-series. I drove one prior to buying my ZT CDTi and the interior quality was awful. The dash had numerous rattle which the dealer said were down to it being an early production car and the tailgate wouldn't open as the locking mechanism had jammed. I also looked at an A3 but was put of my the orange peel paint on the side of the car.

I then went to the MGR dealer and purchased a ZT which was perfect although the dealership was nowhere near as pleasant or flashy at the BMW/Audi dealers

the burnt out car, was a little obvious.

as iam very interested in car's in general, i got the chance to chat to the various owner's and one repair man.

the 1 series is quite popular around here, for some reason.

Quite probably, Atmos. I have been known to be wrong before!

The positions you quote from JD Power is exactly where you would expect the Germans to be. But why is there a big disparity between JD Power and Which? Why is it that the Audi TT is regarded as being an unreliable car - even by Audi enthusiast clubs and web sites? Why are we seeing problems with BMW 1-series cars, as well as increased reliability problems with BMW 2-litre diesels?

I guess it is down to timing. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe JD Power do surveys on cars at 3-4 years old - i.e. to get a long-term view of the cars, whereas some of the other surveys have been done on cars at 12 months old. In other words, a few years ago the cars were good, but quality has dropped in the past year or two.

If so, BMW, Audi and Mercedes are going to take a hit in JD Power surveys in the next two years.

But to be honest, it doesn't really make much sense does it? If they were good three years ago, why aren't they now? Either JD Power have got it wrong, or Which? have got it wrong, or the whole world has got it wrong and I should depart the 21st Century at the earliest possible opportunity. Time Machine anybody?

The only other alternative is that they are using lower quality steel on some components (which is conceivable as raw steel prices have increased by 50% or so in the past 18 months) or buying more components in from cheaper parts of the world and the quality control just isn't up there just yet.

See this is the way I see the BMW 1-Series.

BMW engineers take a potentially decent base for a FWD medium car. Then, as if from out of the blue, the directors come along saying "Nein! Dies neue wagen RWD sollte!" (This car must be RWD) So the engineers do so.

The bean counters then come along. "Diese auto sehr billig zur anfertigen aber sehr teue ankaufen sollte!" (This car must be cheap to produce but expensive to buy) So the engineers abandon contracts with quality German Fabric producers and call up their friends in China, but BMW still smack a bloody big price tag onto it.

Lets not go into detail on the choice of Bangle to design it shall we or else we will be here all night... :eyes:

And wvala! You have the British public in the palm of your hands. I have no sympathy for anyone who buys a 1-Series and takes it back to the dealers within days because of faults...

Yeah, saw a new Mini being towed by a BMW 5-Series estate Customer Support vehicle last week. Didn't want to comment since it's British, but hey, it's engine comes from the land of tinned steak pies (Fray Bentos or somewhere exotic and umm, not British) so what the heck.

And I have seen loads of Rovers, Fords, Mercs, BMW, Vauxhalls, etc broken down in the last year, just not sad enough to take a photo of them............which is a little sad if you ask me, but whatever floats you boat I suppose....

It was a letdown. Cramped, and generally not much better than a normal BMW 3 in terms of performance. I've driven a 318 or 316 ( can't remember what it was labelled, but with a 1.9 engine in - go figure) compact and was un-impressed. I've driven a 3 series tourer and thought that was more fun.

The figures I have quoted are from the US JD Power survey - as it is the biggest one and has a very good reputation. To be honest I know nothing about "Which?", but as JD Power is the world leader in this area I see a limited relevance in further minor studies.

As you ask for it, here is the correction: JD Power examines new cars (12 months production period).

You are surely right that different car models from one manufacturer can be on a different quality level (for example the TT is not on the same level as other Audi models). I know nothing about any huge BMW quality problems - what longbridge lad has written sounds not so credible for me. A reliable source (study) is needed to make any real conclusions.

My point is that there surely have been quality problems at German manufacturers - but they move into the right direction now. That´s something the US JD Power survey clearly shows (BMW was last year on position 12, now 3. Mercedes was last year on 10, now 6).

He's a solicitor, he should be able to sort the bas***ds out. As a solicitor I feel he should have a luxorious car to drive around in though, so get a 75 or ZT!

Surely he can reject it now with all these faults and waiting times. If he agreed to the first ten problems then had another would they then say but it only has one problem cause you agreed to the rest????

Take them to Watchdog or the courts! Trade descriptions! Sale of Goods Act?

Sort them out. Horrid cars anyway - they are my least fave of all time!

As I have posted in the past, I believe that the 1 Series was a marketing exercise by BMW to see how foolish us Brits really are:

BMW MANAGEMENT:
"Lets build a really, really, really ugly bad car from the worst materials and parts that will get slated by the press, we'll charge an absolute fortune for it and lets see if those crazy Brits will fall over themselves to buy it"

Yep we've fallen for it hook, line and sinker !

boxwellm, to make it more precise here is a quote how the JD Power survey works: "For the 2005 report more than 62,000 new car buyers in the USA were contacted 90 days after taking delivery. They were asked to rate their vehicles on 135 topics in nine major segments.".

Another reliable source for me is the ADAC break-down evaluation for 2004. The ADAC is a huge German car club (and by the way they bought a fleet of ZR 160s recently and the only Rover I saw at the last IAA was at the ADAC stand).

Last year the ADAC was called to more than 3.64 million car break-downs, they evaluate those results to find out how reliable cars are. They put those cars in 7 different segments (small class, middle class...)

The result was astonishing, unlike the years before the German manufacturers have some very good results. Top positions have the A-class, M-class, Audi A2, A6 and A4 Cabrio. Second places have the Mini, A4, S-class and 3-series Cabrio. The 1-series is too new, it will be in the next evaluation. Considering the huge amount of data this has something to say.

I wouldn't say my ZS180 ownership has been entirely problem-free, but it's reassuring to know I could have pissed away another five grand on a dead-slow B*W and had MORE problems!!! David that list of problems with the 1-series is shocking!
