THE CHEVROLET LACETTI STARS ON BBC TOP GEAR

* 1.8CDX is the new ‘Reasonably Priced Car’

The Chevrolet Lacetti is BBC Top Gear’s new ‘Reasonably Priced Car’ and will be seen in a fun-packed celebrity shoot-out to re-establish leader board times in the first of the new series which starts on Sunday on BBC2.

The Lacetti five-seat family car range starts from £9795 and is not just reasonably priced but offers great value whether it be the five-door family hatch, the fully equipped four-door saloon or the practical family station wagon. The Top Gear ‘Reasonably Priced Car’ is the Lacetti CDX saloon powered by a 1.8 litre, 119 horsepower, 16-valve engine and comes fully specified with leather trim, climate control air conditioning, navigation system and traction control. This model also forms the basis for Chevrolet’s World Touring Car which can be seen at the Brands Hatch round of the Championship on 21 May.

The celebrities who will drive the Lacetti in each programme will probably have little desire for traction control as they drive at the limit around the Top Gear test track in search of that coveted fastest time on the leader board. Jimmy Carr led in the last series until he was soundly beaten by Ellen MacArthur so he comes to the first programme determined to get back to the top.

The new Top Gear series starts on Sunday 7 May at 8.00pm on BBC2.

Don’t miss it.

No it's still a Daewoo design, (sadly)

Although it's called a Holden Viva here, which is an old Vauxhall name

Not bad for a whitegoods car if you don't ask much of it

Hang on... I thought the 'reasonably priced car' had to have a list price of under £10,000.

Certainly doesn't sound like the spec that Chevvy/Daewoo have given to Top Gear.

"Foul", I say, which being a Daewoo, it probably is.

I'd believe it. All those specs and more can be bought on Korean cars selling in Australia for around the 8000 pound mark. That's why they've picked up such a large share of the market - they offer incredible value for money.

I bet it's about £3k more than the Liana.....

has anyone thought that maybe the BBC purchased a Lacetti 1.8CDX at a one-off, specially discounted price of £10,000 or under?

After all some dealers are offering the base model 1.4SE (RRP £9,695) for just £7895 or £123 a month including air-con, and this is to the general public

it's 100% Daewoo and 0% Vauxhall.

and Vauxhall Astra? Opel Astra more like it.
Well either my eyes deceive me or GM's hype machine has managed to con people (again). There is more than a passing resemblance between our old Astra

Astra

and the Lacetti:

Lacetti

Just look at the doors and the overall bodyshape. It's the same car!

The wheelbase's of the two cars, are different. Vauxhall Astra - 2606mm vs Chevrolet Lacetti - 2600mm.

Pretty sure that the GM Astra and the Lacetti do actually sit on different platforms... the development of the Lacetti predates GM's acquisition of Chevrolet.

That is true John, however, Daewoo did base their cars on old GM platforms. The Daewoo Nexia was a Mark 2 Vauxhall Astra.

I do think they are different platforms, however.

6mm is neither here not there when you consider the frontal restyle. They probably just 'adjusted' the front struts slightly. Anyway lets face it, why would cash-strpped GM bother to design a whole new Daewoo when they had a previous gen Astra lying around? I still say it the old Astra - it just looks too much like the old Astra for it to be conincidental.

the log book does say no full throttle starts

they were going full plet All the time not many clutches could stand that treatment
Yeah im not going to take reliability pointers from a car thats had that sort of treatment, especially at that stage in its life.
Was it pouring out a little smoke on those full bore standing starts? New engines use a bit of oil, was that evidence of that coupled with its punishment?
