TF Servicing!?!

Hi all,

My TF160 requires its 3 year service, although its only just reached 17,000 miles.

Anyway, I was going to take the opportunity to also have wither the Xpower exhaust or the Xpower/Eibach springs fitted dependant on where i have the service done.

So here's my dilema. Who should I take it to. Mike Satur is only about 1 1/2 hours drive away and currently has the deal on the Xpower exhaust.

They have quoted me ÂŁ252 inc vat for the service and ÂŁ280 inc vat and fitting for the Xpower exhaust.

Then there is Techspeed in Leamington which is about 40 mins from my parents house which I visit once atleast once a month, who I have yet to call for their service price, but I understand that the springs cost about ÂŁ105 and they charge about ÂŁ120 for fitting and 4 wheel allignment so thats about ÂŁ225. I guess the service cost should probably be similar to that quoted by Mike Satur.

Anyway, I have a choice to make about which mod to get done first and where to have my service done at the same time. My thinking is that teh Xpower exhuast price from MS is for a limited period while stocks last so I should jump on that while I can!

What do you lot think, is service cost reasonable, do you agree with my thinking!?!

The 3 year service is a biggy,so ÂŁ252 is VERY reasonable I think.

As for the dilema (you lucky so and so;) ) it has to be the exhaust.Springs...no one can see them, and when youre cruising around you wont even know youve got them fitted!Whereas with boomy exhaust...oh yes.
And it IS for a limited time,so Id go for the exhaust if I were you.

i wasnt aware the 3 yr service was much bigger than the previous 2. i thoguht the 4th/60k one was teh biggy with the cam belt change etc.

IIRC my dealer has the 3rd year at about ÂŁ190 i think, so anything around the ÂŁ200-250 mark should be fine depending on area.

The cambelt change one is THE biggy of biggys. But Im sure I read that the 3 year service included the brake fluid and coolant change???Will have to go and check later(when I can be arsed ofcourse).

I concur, I would have thought that the 3rd year service could be cheaper then the second year as the brake fluid does not need to be changed.

Yep,Ive just checked in the manual, and its the two and four year service for coolant/brake fluids.
It was ALL my previous cars that were the three year one.Confused and forgetfull or what.
I seem to be showing signs of the dreaded SOG syndrome much earlier than expected.

So do we think ÂŁ252 inc vat price I've been quoted by MS is a bit high? It is in line with the published prices on his website that show servicing costs for a 1.8vvc as

Service costs are inclusive of replacement parts, fluids and labour as required by the standard service schedule. We use quality semi-synthetic oil recommended by the manufacturers.
Service Interval MGF 1.8iVVC

12 Months or 12,000 miles ÂŁ145.00

24 Months or 24,000 miles ÂŁ160.00

36 Months or 36,000 miles ÂŁ215.00

48 Months or 48,000 miles ÂŁ175.00

60 Months or 60,000 miles ÂŁ525.00 inc belts

72 Months or 72,000 milesÂŁ145.00

Although the website does appear to be quite out of date and in need of a refresh. Some of the prices of the cars for sale are ridiculously high, thats if they are even still for sale!

Exhaust price seems good though and I would like to kill to birds with one stone as it were!!

I'm taking it you mean the cars that are on mikes site? they have been on a while so might be part of the reason they are high, also they have all be sorted by mike, so you will be getting a sound car.

In terms of servicing I would take mine to Mike if I didnt live 3-400 miles away, since he is a specialist and knows what he is doing, unlike my local MGR joint!:bandit: <- thats the symbol for bandits by the way!!:yikes:

Obviously the prices I quoted above from Mikes site are based on the MGF and its service intervals every 12,000 miles.

From looking at the manual and previous service invoices I believe the TF's services are every 15,000 miles. In fact on the back of the service invoices from SMC Rover Middlesex, it has a chart that shows

12 Months or 15,000 miles - A SERVICE

24 Months or 30,000 miles - B SERVICE

36 Months or 45,000 miles - A SERVICE

48 Months or 60,000 miles - C SERVICE

60 Months or 75,000 miles - A SERVICE

72 Months or 90,000 miles - B SERVICE

So surely Mikes 12 month service on a TF should cost the same amount as the 36 month service!?!

Just left another message with them to get back to me about the large differences in the price, and what that extra cost may be for considering the check sheet for the 12mth and 36mth service is exactly the same!

You'll know when I know!!

Pesonally, I don't care if Mike Satur is more expensive. You are getting a known quantity - He is an F/TF specialist. In fact he has refused to Service my ZT as he has as much F/TF work to do as it is.

If you want quality you have to pay for it, he has to maintain wages for his skilled staff to keep them. I will not bother with a replacement warranty on the TF, and use the saving to offset servicing by Mike - I am working on the basis that if he is looking after it I won't need the warranty (for serious mechanical failure) as it will be done right.

Well another phonecall to Mike Satur today, (hate having to leave a message all the time and wait for someone to phone me back), to try and get to the bottom of the service prices. Ladie on the phone, is pleasent but wasn't very sure on the TF service schedule. She was trying to tell me that the extra cost was for having the brake fluid/coolant changed, but I was trying to explain to her that on the TF, its meant to be done every 2 years, so it wouldn't need doing until the 4th year service. But she was insistent it was on the 3rd year service that I want done, even though I've got the service checklist and TF manual infront of me and she couldn't find one at her end!

Anyway, I've asked her to check it with Mike and get back to me with a revised quote for the service. I also asked if they could possibly email me a picture of the particualr Janspeed Xpower exhausts they have on sale, as she couldn't be sure on whether it was the slash cut tailpipe design or what kind of xpower detailing it had on it (stickers or etched). She told me it was an oval tailpipe but I thought the xpowers were all round tailpipes!?!

Hope to have a response from them soon. I hope the workmanship of Mr Satur is worth all the hassle now!
