Strange clicking after engine switched off (V6)

This is the only odd thing that seems to be happening with my car, occasionally after the engine is switched off, a repeated clicking/whirring noise comes from under the bonnet. It usually continues for about 5 minutes or so. Seems to be coming from a little box (VIS motors?) just behind the alternator. I tried unplugging the cable that feeds into it and the clicking predictably stopped -but I can't help thinking it shouldn't be doing it. Any ideas?

Ouch...what's involved with rectifying it? I'm pretty sure the VIS valves are working when it's running, there is a definite kick at 3,000rpm and again around 5,500rpm or so. I read about catch tanks, but is it too late?

Well as far as I can hear the inlet manifold is not rattling at the moment - the VIS motors do appear to be doing their job, but I think the clicking one could stop altogether soon considering the sounds it makes. I'll have a look at eBay prices...
